Abstract

A prosthetic implant useful in a cementless application is disclosed. The implant may include a curved bone facing surface and one or more pegs or keels. Preferably, the implant is implanted on a bone surface that has been prepared so as to allow for a snap fit between the implant and the bone.

Claims

1. A prosthetic implant comprising:

a first end;

a second end;

an articular surface;

a bone contacting surface including a curved portion;

a first element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a first curved surface; and

a second element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a second curved surface,

wherein the first and second curved surfaces are curved about a first pivot point.

2. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, further comprising:

a third element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a third curved surface,

wherein the third curved surface is curved about the first pivot point.

3. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, wherein first and second curved surfaces face the first end and the pivot point is adjacent the first end.

4. The prosthetic implant of claim 3, further comprising a third element extending from the bone contacting surface, the third element located adjacent the second end.

5. The prosthetic implant of claim 4, wherein the third element is at least partially arcuate.

6. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, wherein the first element further includes a third curved surface and the second element further includes a fourth curved surface, the third and fourth curved surfaces being curved about the first pivot point.

7. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, wherein the bone contacting surface includes a flat portion defining a first plane, the first pivot point located along the first plane.

8. The prosthetic implant of claim 7, wherein the first pivot point is spaced apart from the first end.

9. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, wherein the bone contacting surface includes a flat portion defining a first plane, the first pivot point located apart from the first plane.

10. The prosthetic implant of claim 9, wherein the first pivot point is spaced apart from the first end.

11. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, wherein the implant is a femoral component.

12. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, wherein the implant is a tibial component.

13. The prosthetic implant of claim 1, wherein the implant is a patello-femoral component.

14. An prosthetic implant comprising:

a first end;

a second end;

an articular surface;

a bone contacting surface including a curved portion;

a first element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a first curved surface; and

a second element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a second curved surface,

wherein the first curved surface is curved about a first pivot point and the second curved surface is curved about a second pivot point.

15. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, further comprising:

a third element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a third curved surface,

wherein the third curved surface is curved about one of the first or second pivot points.

16. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, wherein first and second curved surfaces face the first end and the first and second pivot points are adjacent the first end.

17. The prosthetic implant of claim 16, further comprising a third element extending from the bone contacting surface, the third element located adjacent the second end.

18. The prosthetic implant of claim 17, wherein the third element is at least partially arcuate.

19. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, wherein the first element further includes a third curved surface and the second element further includes a fourth curved surface, the third curved surface being curved about the first pivot point and the fourth curved surface being curved about the second pivot point.

20. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, wherein the bone contacting surface includes a flat portion defining a first plane, the first and second pivot points located along the first plane.

21. The prosthetic implant of claim 20, wherein the first and second pivot points are spaced apart from the first end.

22. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, wherein the bone contacting surface includes a flat portion defining a first plane, the first and second pivot points located apart from the first plane.

23. The prosthetic implant of claim 22, wherein the first and second pivot points are spaced apart from the first end.

24. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, wherein the implant is a femoral component.

25. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, wherein the implant is a tibial component.

26. The prosthetic implant of claim 14, wherein the implant is a patello-femoral component.

27. A method of arthroplasty comprising:

creating a first resected bone surface on a first end of a bone, at least a portion of the first resected bone surface being non-planar;

preparing a first cavity extending into the first resected bone surface;

providing a prosthetic implant, the implant including an articular surface, a bone contacting surface including a curved portion and a first element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a first curved surface, the first curved surface curved about a first pivot point; and

coupling the implant by pivoting the implant about the first pivot point until the first element becomes disposed within the first cavity.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the making step includes utilizing a cutting tool coupled with a robot.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the preparing step further includes preparing a second cavity extending into the first resected bone surface.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the implant includes a second element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a second curved surface, the second curved surface curved about the first pivot point, and the implanting step includes disposing the second curved surface within the second cavity.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the implant includes a second element extending from the bone contacting surface and having a second curved surface, the second curved surface curved about a second pivot point, and the implanting step includes disposing the second curved surface within the second cavity.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the first and second pivot points are at different locations.

33. The method of claim 27, wherein the first element includes a second curved surface.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the preparing step includes preparing the first cavity to include a third curved surface corresponding to the first curved surface and a fourth curved surface corresponding to the second curved surface.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the first, second, third and fourth surfaces are curved about the first pivot point.

36. The method of claim 34, wherein the first and second surface are curved about the first pivot point and the third and fourth surfaces are curved about a second pivot point, the first and second pivot points being at different locations.

37. The method of claim 27, wherein the implant further includes a first projection facing a first end of the implant.

38. The method of claim 37, further comprising the step of creating a first divot in the first resected surface.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the implanting step includes disposing the first projection within the first divot.

40. The method of claim 39, further comprising the step of creating a second divot and wherein the implanting step includes disposing the first projection within the second divot.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein the first projection is ball shaped.

42. The method of claim 27, wherein the bone contacting surface includes a flat portion defining a first plane, the first pivot point located along the first plane.

43. The method of claim 27, wherein the bone contacting surface includes a flat portion defining a first plane, the first pivot point located apart from the first plane.

44. The method of claim 27, wherein the implanting step is performed through the use of a robot.
