Abstract

A system and method are provided for providing notifications related to the battery level of a mobile device. Upon detecting a low battery state, a low battery update may be sent to a presence server to enable the low battery update to be provided to one or more contacts associated with the mobile device. The one or more contacts may then update their UI to reflect a change in presence status and may provided alerts upon detecting that the mobile device has been recharged.

Claims

1. A method of operating a mobile device, the method comprising:

after detecting a low battery state, sending a low battery update to a presence server to enable the low battery update to be provided to one or more contacts associated with the mobile device.

2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising updating a user interface for the mobile device with a low battery presence indicator to indicate the low battery state.

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein updating the user interface comprises one of altering an existing presence indicator to include the low battery presence indicator and replacing an existing presence indicator with the low battery presence indicator.

4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the low battery presence indicator comprises one or more of an icon and a description.

5. The method according to claim 3, further comprising upon detecting that a battery for the mobile device has been connected to a power source, altering the low battery presence indicator to indicate that a recharge of the battery is in progress.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising providing a low battery warning, and wherein the low battery update is sent upon detecting a selection associated with the low battery warning.

7. The method according to claim 1, further comprising after detecting that the low battery state no longer exists, sending a recharge update to the presence server to enable the recharge update to be provided to the one or more contacts associated with the mobile device.

8. The method according to claim 7, further comprising updating a user interface for the mobile device to indicate that the low battery state no longer exists.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein updating the user interface comprises one of removing a low battery presence indicator that has been included in an existing presence indicator and replacing the low battery presence indicator with the existing presence indicator.

10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the low battery presence indicator comprises one or more of an icon and a description.

11. The method according to claim 7, wherein the recharge update enables a battery recharge alert to be displayed to the one or more contacts associated with the mobile device.

12. A computer readable medium comprising computer executable instructions for operating a mobile device, the computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:

after detecting a low battery state, sending a low battery update to a presence server to enable the low battery update to be provided to one or more contacts associated with the mobile device.

13. A mobile device comprising a processor, a display, and memory, the memory comprising computer executable instructions for operating the mobile device, the computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:

after detecting a low battery state, sending a low battery update to a presence server to enable the low battery update to be provided to one or more contacts associated with the mobile device.

14. A method of operating a mobile device, the method comprising:

receiving, from a presence server, a low battery update for one or more contacts associated with the mobile device, the low battery update having been provided to the presence server by the one or more contacts after detecting a low battery state.

15. The method according to claim 14, further comprising updating a user interface for the mobile device with a low battery presence indicator to indicate the low battery state for each of the one or more contacts.

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein updating the user interface comprises one of altering an existing presence indicator to include the low battery presence indicator and replacing an existing presence indicator with the low battery presence indicator.

17. The method according to claim 16, wherein the low battery presence indicator comprises one or more of an icon and a description.

18. The method according to claim 16, further comprising altering the low battery presence indicator to indicate that a recharge of the battery is in progress after receiving an indication that a battery has been connected to a power source.

19. The method according to claim 14, further comprising receiving a recharge update from the presence server, the recharge update having been provided to the presence server after detecting that the low battery state no longer exists.

20. The method according to claim 19, further comprising updating a user interface for the mobile device to indicate that the low battery state no longer exists.

21. The method according to claim 20, wherein updating the user interface comprises one of removing a low battery presence indicator that has been included in an existing presence indicator and replacing the low battery presence indicator with the existing presence indicator.

22. The method according to claim 21, wherein the low battery presence indicator comprises one or more of an icon and a description.

23. The method according to claim 19, wherein the recharge update triggers a battery recharge alert to be displayed in association with the one or more contacts.

24. A computer readable medium comprising computer executable instructions for operating a mobile device, the computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:

receiving, from a presence server, a low battery update for one or more contacts associated with the mobile device, the low battery update having been provided to the presence server by the one or more contacts after detecting a low battery state.

25. A mobile device comprising a processor, a display, and memory, the memory comprising computer executable instructions for operating the mobile device, the computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:

receiving, from a presence server, a low battery update for one or more contacts associated with the mobile device, the low battery update having been provided to the presence server by the one or more contacts after detecting a low battery state.
