Abstract

A method of preserving a cellulosic material are provided. The method includes contacting the cellulosic material with a paraben-containing monomer and polymerizing the paraben-containing monomer. Articles including a cellulosic material and at least one polymer which includes paraben moieties are also provided.

Claims

1. An article comprising a cellulosic material and at least one polymer comprising paraben moieties, wherein the polymer comprises at least one of a polyacrylate, a polymethacrylate, a polyacrylamide, a polyolefin, a polyepoxy, a polyurethane, and a polyurea.

2. The article of claim 1, wherein the cellulosic material is wood or paper.

3. The article of claim 1 which is a wooden plank, utility pole, railroad tie, ship'"'"'s hull, wooden utensil, toy, model, piece of furniture, vehicle, or serving dish.

4. The article of claim 1, wherein the polymer comprises repeat units formed from a monomer of Formula I:

6. The article of claim 4, wherein R⁶ is a C₁-C₃₀ alkylene or a polyalkyleneoxy moiety.

7. The article of claim 4, wherein R¹, R², R⁴ and R⁵ are H.

8. The article of claim 4, wherein R⁶ is a polyalkyleneoxy moiety.

9. The article of claim 4, wherein R³ is OH.

15. A method of preserving a cellulosic material, the method comprising:

contacting the cellulosic material with a monomer of Formula I; and

polymerizing the monomer of Formula I;

20. A method of preserving a cellulosic material, the method comprising:

polymerizing a monomer of Formula I to give a polymer comprising repeat units formed from the monomer of Formula I; and

contacting the cellulosic material with the polymer;
