Abstract

Various embodiments are disclosed for a services policy communication system and method. In some embodiments, a communications device implements a service policy for assisting billing for the communications device use of a service on a network; and monitors use of the service based on the service policy, in which a local service usage is synchronized with a network based service usage.

Claims

1. A wireless device comprising:

one or more modems for enabling the wireless device to communicate over at least two wireless access networks, the at least two wireless access networks comprising a first wireless access network and a second wireless access network;

a user interface;

memory configured to store

a first service policy associated with the first wireless access network, the first service policy comprising one or more first-network policy settings or rules, the first service policy configured to assist in reducing data usage associated with a first service activity over the first wireless access network, the first service activity being less than all service activities available to the wireless device, the first service is policy for enabling control of the first service activity on the first wireless access network that is different from how the first service activity is controlled on the second wireless access network, and

a user input indicating whether to apply the first service policy when the wireless device is connected to the first wireless access network; and

one or more processors for executing one or more agents, the one or more agents including an application interface agent configured to assist in applying the first service policy by arranging a setting of a software component associated with the first service activity, the one or more agents configured to;

obtain, through the user interface, the user input,

identify when the wireless device is connected to the first wireless access network,

identify attempted or successful data communications over the first wireless access network that are associated with the first service activity, and

apply the first service policy to the identified attempted or successful data communications over the first wireless access network, thereby reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity.

2. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the software component is an application program.

3. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the setting of the software component assists in controlling an aspect of an e-mail transfer, a media content resolution, or a media compression level.

4. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service policy is configured to cause an application level access control associated with the software component.

5. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service policy is configured to cause an application level service monitoring or reporting associated with the software component.

6. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service policy is configured to cause an application level service billing associated with the software component.

7. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service policy is configured to cause an application level traffic shaping associated with the software component.

8. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service policy is configured to cause an application level quality of service control associated with the software component.

9. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service policy is configured to cause a service-dependent billing associated with the software component.

10. The wireless device recited in claim 1, wherein the application interface agent is configured to communicate information to or from the software component to assist in applying the first service policy.

11. A wireless device comprising:

one or more modems for enabling the wireless device to communicate over at least two wireless access networks, the at least two wireless access networks comprising a first wireless access network and a second wireless access network;

a user interface;

memory configured to store

a first service policy associated with the first wireless access network, the first service policy comprising one or more first-network policy is settings or rules configured to assist a policy implementation agent in identifying a data flow and applying an access control or traffic shaping to the data flow, the data flow comprising one or more related data transfers between a software component on the wireless device and a network communication end point, the first service policy configured to assist in reducing data usage associated with a first service activity over the first wireless access network, the first service activity being less than all service activities available to the wireless device, the first service policy for enabling control of the first service activity on the first wireless access network that is different from how the first service activity is controlled on the second wireless access network, and

a user input indicating whether to apply the first service policy when the wireless device is connected to the first wireless access network; and

one or more processors for executing one or more agents, the one or more agents including the policy implementation agent, the one or more agents configured to;

obtain, through the user interface, the user input,

identify when the wireless device is connected to the first wireless access network,

identify the data flow, and

apply the access control or traffic shaping to the data flow by operating on the data flow at one or more points in a device communication stack, thereby reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity.

12. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein the one or more agents are configured to identify the data flow at least in part by assigning a virtual or literal tag to the data flow, the virtual or literal tag configured to preserve the association of the data flow with the first service activity following formatting, processing, or encryption functions that operate on the data flow.

13. The wireless device recited in claim 12, wherein at least a portion of at least one of the formatting, processing, or encryption functions is performed in the communication stack.

14. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity comprises blocking the data flow.

15. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity comprises blocking the data flow when the wireless device is connected to the first wireless access network and allowing the data flow when the wireless device is connected to the second wireless access network.

16. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity comprises throttling or traffic shaping the data flow.

17. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity comprises delaying the data flow.

18. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity comprises assigning the data flow to a lower-priority traffic queue.

19. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein the first service activity comprises a background activity or a software update, and reducing data usage over the first is wireless access network associated with the first service activity comprises delaying, deferring, throttling, or blocking the first service activity.

20. The wireless device recited in claim 11, wherein reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity comprises directing the data flow to a particular network end point, route, or tunnel.

24. The wireless device recited in claim 16, wherein the device credential comprises one or more of a mobile equipment identifier, a media access control (MAC) address, a serial number, a phone number, a device identification number, a software hash, a software signature, a software certificate, a device certificate, a subscriber identity module (SIM) identifier, a hardware identifier, a password, and a device type identifier.

21. A wireless device comprising:

one or more modems for enabling the wireless device to communicate over at least two wireless access networks, the at least two wireless access networks comprising a first wireless access network and a second wireless access network;

a user interface;

memory configured to store

a first service policy associated with the first wireless access network, the first service policy comprising one or more first-network policy settings or rules, the first service policy configured to assist in reducing data usage associated with a first service activity over the first wireless access network, the first service activity being less than all service activities available to the wireless device, the first service policy for enabling control of the first service activity on the first wireless access network that is different from how the first service activity is controlled on the second wireless access network, and

a user input indicating whether to apply the first service policy when the wireless device is connected to the first wireless access network; and

one or more processors for executing one or more agents, the one or more agents configured to;

obtain, through the user interface, the user input,

identify when the wireless device is connected to the first wireless access network,

identify attempted or successful data communications over the first wireless access network that are associated with the first service activity,

apply the first service policy to the identified attempted or successful data communications over the first wireless access network, thereby reducing data usage over the first wireless access network associated with the first service activity, and

assist in establishing a secure service control link between the wireless device and a network element, the secure service control link secured by an encryption protocol and configured to support control-plane communications between the wireless device and the network element.

22. The wireless device recited in claim 21, wherein the one or more agents are further configured to obtain at least a portion of the first service policy from the network element over the secure service control link.

23. The wireless device recited in claim 21, wherein assisting in establishing the secure service control link comprises:

sending a device credential to the network element, and

obtaining a shared key for use in encrypting communications over the secure service control link.
