Abstract

A digital camera that has a CMOS image sensor and a central processor. The central processor has four processing units and an image sensor interface integrated onto a single chip. The image sensor interface receives data from the CMOS image sensor and the four processing units simultaneously process the data.

Claims

1. A digital camera comprising:

a CMOS image sensor; and

,

a central processor having an image sensor interface for receiving data from the CMOS image sensor, and four processing units configured for simultaneous processing of the data;

wherein,

the central processor is integrated into a single chip.

2. The camera according to claim 1 wherein the central processor further comprises an input FIFO (first in, first out) for receiving data from the image sensor interface and inputting the data to the four processing units, and an output FIFO for receiving processed data.

3. The camera according to claim 2 wherein the central processor further comprises a crossbar switch for interconnecting each of the four processing units.

The camera according to claim 3 wherein the central processor further comprises a central processing unit and a data bus connecting the central processing unit to the input FIFO and the output FIFO, the central processing unit providing a processing core to operatively control the four processing units.

5. The camera according to claim 4 wherein the central processor further comprises a data cache to store the processed data until required by the central processor unit.

6. The camera according to claim 5 further comprising an inkjet printhead wherein the data is input image data from the CMOS image sensor and the four processing units perform one or more processing tasks selected from:

rotating the input image data for printing by the printhead;

colour converting the input image data for printing by the printhead; and

,

dithering the input image data for printing by the printhead.

The camera according to claim 6 wherein the central processor further comprises a plurality of interfaces for transmitting the processed data to functional components within the camera, each of the interfaces being connected to the data cache for reading the processed data relevant to the functional component corresponding to that interface.

8. The camera according to claim 7 wherein each of the processing units have at least one address generator for addressing the processed data for selective transmission to the functional components.

9. The camera according to claim 8 wherein each of the four processing units having RAM (random access memory) for microcode written by the central processor unit to operatively control that processing unit.

10. The camera according to claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of interfaces is a keyboard interface for user input of instructions to the central processor unit such that the central processor rewrites the microcode in the RAM within each of the processing units.

The camera according to claim 10 wherein one of the plurality of interfaces is a scanner interface for receiving scanned image data of an image encoding image processing instructions in a machine readable form, the scanner interface being configured to decode the scanned image data and send the image processing instructions to the input FIFO.

The camera according to claim 11 further comprising a print media roll on which the printhead prints, the print media roll being removable and replaceable, and one of the plurality of interfaces is an authentication chip interface for interrogating an authentication chip in the media roll for authentication information.

13. The camera according to claim 12 further comprising an LCD display wherein one of the plurality of interfaces is an LCD interface such that the processed data addressed to the LCD interface is transmitted from the data cache to the LCD display.
