Abstract

A multi-core processor for installation in a hand-held device that has first and second image sensors. The multi-core processor has a first sensor interface for receiving data from the first image sensor, and a second sensor interface for receiving data from the second image sensor. Multiple processing units in the multi-core processor are configured to operate in parallel for processing data from the first and second sensor interfaces. The multiple processing units and the first and second sensor interfaces are all integrated onto a single chip.

Claims

1. A multi-core processor for a hand-held device with first and second image sensors, the multi-core processor comprising:

a first sensor interface for receiving data from the first image sensor;

a second sensor interface for receiving data from the second image sensor;

multiple processing units configured to operate in parallel for processing data from the first and second sensor interfaces;

wherein,

the multiple processing units and the first and second sensor interfaces are integrated onto a single chip.

The multi-core processor according to claim 1 wherein the first image sensor is a CMOS image sensor for capturing images viewed by the hand-held device user and the second image sensor is a scanner for scanning encoded data printed on a substrate in a machine readable form, and the first sensor interface is an image sensor interface and the second sensor interface is a scanner interface.

3. The multi-core processor according to claim 2 wherein the multiple processing units are four processing units and the multi-core processor further comprises a crossbar switch for interconnecting each of the four processing units.

The multi-core processor according to claim 3 further comprising an input FIFO (first in, first out) and an output FIFO, the input FIFO being configured for receiving data from the image sensor interface and inputting the data to the four processing units, and the output FIFO being configured for receiving processed data to be read by other components.

5. The multi-core processor according to claim 4 further comprising a central processing unit and a data bus connecting the central processing unit to the input FIFO and the output FIFO, the central processing unit providing a processing core to operatively control the four processing units.

6. The multi-core processor according to claim 5 further comprising a data cache to store the processed data until required by the central processing unit.

7. The multi-core processor according to claim 6 wherein the hand-held device further comprises an inkjet printhead wherein the data is input image data from the CMOS image sensor and the four processing units perform one or more processing tasks selected from:

rotating the input image data for printing by the printhead;

colour converting the input image data for printing by the printhead; and

,

dithering the input image data for printing by the printhead.

8. The multi-core processor according to claim 7 wherein the scanner interface is connected to the input FIFO and the four processing units operate in accordance with image processing instructions in the encoded data scanned by the scanner.

9. The multi-core processor according to claim 8 further comprising a display interface connected to the data cache for reading the processed data and transmitting the processed data to a color LCD display in the hand-held device.

10. The multi-core processor according to claim 7 wherein each of the processing units have at least one address generator for the processed data sent to the data cache.

11. The multi-core processor according to claim 10 wherein each of the four processing units has RAM (random access memory) for microcode written by the central processor unit to operatively control that processing unit.

12. The multi-core processor according to claim 11 further comprising a keyboard interface for user input of instructions to the central processor unit for rewriting the microcode in the RAM within each of the processing units.

The multi-core processor according to claim 8 further comprising an authentication chip interface wherein the hand-held device has a print media roll on which the printhead prints, the print media roll being removable and replaceable, such that the authentication chip interface is configured to interrogate an authentication chip in the media roll for authentication information.

The multi-core processor according to claim 1 further comprising a USB (universal serial bus) interface wherein the hand-held device has a USB port for communication with an external device, such that the USB interface connects to the central processor unit via the data bus for communication with the external device.
