Abstract

A handheld electronic device including: first and second image sensors for capturing images and generating image data; a color display for displaying captured images to a user; and an integral processor configured for: controlling operation of the first and second image sensors; controlling operation of the color display; decoding an imaged coding pattern printed on a substrate; and performing an action in the handheld electronic device based on the decoded coding pattern. Decoding of the coding pattern includes the steps of: determining a data area in the image data received from the first or second image sensor; and decoding the coding pattern contained in the determined data area.

Claims

1. A handheld electronic device comprising:

first and second image sensors for capturing images and generating image data;

a color display for displaying captured images to a user; and

an integral processor configured for;

controlling operation of the first and second image sensors;

controlling operation of the color display;

decoding an imaged coding pattern printed on a substrate; and

performing an action in said handheld electronic device based on the decoded coding pattern,

wherein said decoding comprises the steps of;

determining a data area in the image data received from the first or second image sensor; and

decoding the coding pattern contained in the determined data area.

2. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein said decoding comprises the further step of:

detecting target structures defining the data area.

3. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein the second image sensor is configured for imaging the coding pattern.

4. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein said processor is configured to perform said decoding in less than 0.32 seconds.

5. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein said decoding comprises the further step of:

determining one or more control blocks in the data area, said control blocks containing encoded information required for subsequent decoding.

6. The handheld electronic device of claim 5, wherein each control block contains encoded information regarding the size of data to be extracted from the data area.

7. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein the coding pattern is a fault-tolerant coding pattern, such that said decoding corrects one or more errors in the imaged coding pattern.

8. The handheld electronic device of claim 7, wherein said error is due to image blurring.

9. The handheld electronic device of claim 7, wherein said error is due to physical damage of the printed coding pattern.

10. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein the coding pattern is comprised of black and white dotes.

11. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein the action performed in said device is an image-warping effect.

12. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, wherein each of said first and second image sensors is independently selected from the group consisting of:

a CCD image sensor; and

a CMOS image sensor.

13. The handheld electronic device of claim 1, which is a digital camera.
