Abstract

A quad-core processor for use in a hand-held device with a CMOS image sensor. The quad-core processor has an image sensor interface for receiving data from the CMOS image sensor and four processing units interconnected with each other for parallel processing of data from the image sensor interface. The four processing units and the image sensor interface are integrated onto a single chip.

Claims

1. A quad-core processor for a hand-held device with a CMOS image sensor, the quad-core processor comprising:

an image sensor interface for receiving data from the CMOS image sensor; and

,

four processing units interconnected with each other for parallel processing of data from the image sensor interface;

wherein,

the four processing units and the image sensor interface are integrated onto a single chip.

2. The quad-core processor according to claim 1 wherein each of the processing units has rewritable memory for microcode to operatively control that processing unit.

The quad-core processor according to claim 2 further comprising a scanner interface integrated onto the chip with the four processing units wherein the hand-held device has a scanner for scanning encoded data printed on a substrate in a machine readable form, and the scanner interface is configured to receive image processing instructions in the encoded data.

4. The quad-core processor according to claim 3 further comprises a crossbar switch integrated onto the chip to interconnect the four processing units.

The quad-core processor according to claim 4 further comprises an input FIFO (first in, first out) and an output FIFO, both integrated onto the chip with the four processing units, the input FIFO being configured for receiving data from the image sensor interface and inputting the data to the four processing units, and the output FIFO being configured for receiving processed data to be read by other components.

The quad-core processor according to claim 5 further comprising a central processing unit and a data bus, both integrated onto the chip with the four processing units, the data bus configured to connect the central processing unit to the input FIFO and the output FIFO, the central processing unit providing a processing core to operatively control the four processing units.

7. The quad-core processor according to claim 6 further comprising a data cache to store the processed data until required by the central processing unit wherein the data cache is integrated onto the chip with the four processing units.

8. The quad-core processor according to claim 7 further comprising a printhead interface integrated onto the chip with the four processing units wherein the processed data incorporates dot data for the printhead interface to send to a drop-on-demand inkjet printhead.

9. The quad-core processor according to claim 8 wherein the hand-held device incorporates the inkjet printhead and the data is input image data from the CMOS image sensor and the four processing units perform one or more processing tasks selected from:

rotating the input image data for printing by the printhead;

color converting the input image data for printing by the printhead; and

,

dithering the input image data for printing by the printhead.

The quad-core processor according to claim 7 wherein the scanner interface is connected to the input FIFO and the central processing unit for inputting the image processing instructions from the encoded data to the four processing units by using the central processor unit to rewrite the microcode in the memory in each of the four processing units.

The quad-core processor according to claim 10 further comprising a display interface wherein the hand-held device has a color LCD display and the display interface is integrated onto the chip with the four processing units and connected to the data cache for reading the processed data and transmitting the processed data to the color LCD display.

12. The quad-core processor according to claim 11 wherein each of the processing units have at least one address generator for the processed data sent to the data cache.

The quad-core processor according to claim 8 further comprising a keyboard interface integrated onto the chip with the four processing units, the keyboard interface being configured for user input of instructions to the central processor unit for rewriting the microcode in the RAM within each of the processing units.

The quad-core processor according to claim 3 further comprising an authentication chip interface integrated onto the chip with the four processing units, wherein the hand-held device has a print media roll on which the printhead prints, the print media roll being removable and replaceable, such that the authentication chip interface is configured to interrogate an authentication chip in the media roll for authentication information.

The quad-core processor according to claim 6 further comprising a USB (universal serial bus) interface integrated onto the chip with the four processing units wherein the hand-held device has a USB port for communication with an external device, such that the USB interface connects to the central processor unit via the data bus for communication with the external device.
