Abstract

Displays such as organic light-emitting diode displays may be provided with touch sensing capabilities. A touch sensor may be formed from electrodes located on a thin-film encapsulation layer or one or more sides of a polarizer. A single-sided or double-sided touch sensor panel may be attached to the upper or lower surface of a polarizer. Control circuitry may be used to provide control signals to light-emitting diodes in the display using a grid of control lines. The control lines and transparent electrode structures such as indium tin oxide structures formed on a thin-film encapsulation layer or polarizer may be used as electrodes for a touch sensor. Displays may have active regions and inactive peripheral portions. The displays may have edge portions that are bent along a bend axis that is within the active region to form a borderless display. Virtual buttons may be formed on the bent edge portions.

Claims

1. A display, comprising:

an array of organic light-emitting diodes;

a thin-film encapsulation layer that encapsulates the organic light-emitting diodes; and

capacitive touch sensor electrodes on the thin-film encapsulation layer.

2. The display defined in claim 1 further comprising:

a patterned black masking layer having clear openings that are aligned with the array of organic light-emitting diodes, wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes comprise a grid of conductive lines and wherein the conductive lines are covered by the patterned black masking layer.

3. The display defined in claim 2 wherein the conductive lines are patterned to form diamond-shaped electrode pads, wherein at least some of the diamond-shaped electrode paths are connected together to form the capacitive touch sensor electrodes.

4. The display defined in claim 2 wherein the conductive lines comprise metal lines.

5. The display defined in claim 1 further comprising:

a polarizer; and

a layer of adhesive between the polarizer and the capacitive touch sensor electrodes.

6. The display defined in claim 5 wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes comprise patterned transparent conductive structures on the thin-film encapsulation layer that are covered by the layer of adhesive.

7. The display defined in claim 6 further comprising:

control lines that are coupled to the organic light-emitting diodes; and

display and touch sensor control circuitry that is configured to generate control signals that are conveyed over the control lines to the light-emitting diodes and that is configured to gather touch sensor capacitance signals from the patterned transparent conductive structures on the thin-film encapsulation layer and from at least some of the control lines.

8. A display, comprising:

an array of organic light-emitting diodes;

a polarizer having opposing upper and lower surfaces, wherein the lower surface is closer to the array of organic light-emitting diodes than the upper surface; and

capacitive touch sensor electrodes on the lower surface of the polarizer.

9. The display defined in claim 8 further comprising:

a thin-film encapsulation layer that encapsulates the organic light-emitting diodes; and

a layer of adhesive interposed between the capacitive touch sensor electrodes and the thin-film encapsulation layer.

10. The display defined in claim 9 further comprising:

additional capacitive touch sensor electrodes on the upper surface of the polarizer.

11. The display defined in claim 8 further comprising:

control lines that are coupled to the organic light-emitting diodes; and

display and touch sensor control circuitry that is configured to generate control signals that are conveyed over the control lines to the light-emitting diodes and that is configured to gather touch sensor capacitance signals from the capacitive touch sensor electrodes on the lower surface of the polarizer and from at least some of the control lines.

12. The display defined in claim 11 wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes comprise transparent conductive material and wherein the control lines comprise metal.

13. A display, comprising:

an array of organic light-emitting diodes;

a polarizer having opposing upper and lower surfaces, wherein the lower surface is closer to the array than the upper surface; and

capacitive touch sensor electrodes on the upper surface of the polarizer.

14. The display defined in claim 13 further comprising:

control lines that are coupled to the organic light-emitting diodes; and

display and touch sensor control circuitry that is configured to generate control signals that are conveyed over the control lines to the light-emitting diodes and that is configured to gather touch sensor capacitance signals from the capacitive touch sensor electrodes on the upper surface of the polarizer and from at least some of the control lines.

15. The display defined in claim 14 wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes comprise transparent conductive material and wherein the control lines comprise metal.

16. The display defined in claim 13 further comprising a cover glass layer and a layer of adhesive interposed between the capacitive touch sensor electrodes on the upper surface of the polarizer and the cover glass layer.

17. A display, comprising:

an array of organic light-emitting diodes;

a polarizer having opposing upper and lower surfaces, wherein the lower surface is closer to the array than the upper surface;

a touch sensor panel having capacitive touch sensor electrodes formed on a planar dielectric substrate; and

a layer of adhesive with which the touch sensor panel is attached to the polarizer.

18. The display defined in claim 17 wherein the layer of adhesive is interposed between the upper surface of the polarizer and the touch senor panel.

19. The display defined in claim 18 wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes are formed on a single surface of the planar dielectric substrate in the touch sensor panel.

20. The display defined in claim 18 wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes are formed on opposing first and second surfaces of the planar dielectric substrate in the touch sensor panel.

21. The display defined in claim 17 wherein the layer of adhesive is interposed between the lower surface of the polarizer and the touch senor panel.

22. The display defined in claim 21 wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes are formed on a single surface of the planar dielectric substrate in the touch sensor panel.

23. The display defined in claim 21 wherein the capacitive touch sensor electrodes are formed on opposing first and second surfaces of the planar dielectric substrate in the touch sensor panel.

24. An electronic device, comprising:

a housing;

components in the housing; and

a display mounted to a front surface of the housing, wherein the display has an active area and an inactive peripheral area, and wherein at least one edge of the display is bent along a bend axis that lies within the active area so that a bent edge portion of the display that includes part of the active area and part of the inactive area is located on a sidewall of the housing.

25. The electronic device defined in claim 24 wherein the display comprises a first display in a pair of displays mounted to the housing and wherein a second display and first display comprise bend edge portions that are adjacent to one another.

26. The electronic device defined in claim 24 wherein the components include storage and processing circuitry that is configured to display a virtual button in the bent edge portion of the display.
