Abstract

Enhanced telephony computer user interfaces seamlessly integrate and leverage the features of personal computers and telephones. The manner in which media is presented at a computing system can also be modified automatically in response to detected telephone operations. These modifications can include pausing media in response to a detected telephone call and/or adjusting a volume of the media presentation. The media presentation/volume can also be resumed/restored upon detecting that the telephone call has terminated.

Claims

1. A method for controlling audio output rendered from a computing system, the method comprising:

the computing system rendering media at an output device;

the computing system detecting a telephone call;

the computing system, upon detecting the telephone call, modifying the rendering of the media at the output device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said modifying the rendering of the media at the output device comprises pausing the rendering of the media at the output device.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the method further includes unpausing the rendering of the media, such that the computing system resumes rendering the media at the output device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the output device is a speaker and said modifying the rendering of the media at the output device comprises switching the speaker from the rendering of the media to the telephone call.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the method further includes activating a microphone for the telephone call.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein rendering the media at the output device including rendering the media at a particular volume, and wherein said modifying the rendering comprises modifying the particular volume to a lowered volume.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein modifying the particular volume includes lowering the particular volume to the lowered volume gradually, rather than abruptly.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein modifying the particular volume comprises muting the particular volume.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the method further includes displaying a visual indication that the particular volume has been modified.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the visual indication is an icon that shows the particular volume has been lowered.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the visual indication is an icon that shows the particular volume has been muted.

12. The method of claim 6, wherein the method further includes restoring the media to the particular volume upon detecting that the telephone call has terminated.

13. The method of claim 6, wherein the modifying includes pausing the media as well as lowering the particular volume, and wherein the method further includes upon unpausing the media, gradually raising the lowered volume to the particular volume.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting the telephone call comprises detecting an incoming telephone call.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting the telephone call comprises detecting an outgoing telephone call.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the telephone call is a (voice over IP) VOIP call.

17. A computer program product comprising:

one or more computer storage device having stored computer-executable instructions which, when executed, implement a method for controlling audio output rendered from a computing system, the method comprising;

the computing system rendering audio at a speaker;

the computing system detecting a telephone call;

the computing system, upon detecting the telephone call, modifying a volume of the audio at the output device by at least lowering or muting the volume.

18. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the method further includes pausing the audio.

19. A computing system comprising:

a speaker;

one or more storage medium having stored computer-executable instructions which, when executed, implement a method for controlling audio output rendered at the speaker, the method comprising;

the computing system rendering audio at the speaker;

the computing system detecting a telephone call;

the computing system, upon detecting the telephone call, automatically modifying the rendering of the audio by, at least one of either pausing the audio and/or altering a volume of the audio.

20. The computing system of claim 19, wherein the modifying includes said pausing and altering the volume.
