Abstract

Disclosed are systems, apparatus, methods and computer-readable media for presenting feed items in an information feed to be displayed on a display device. In some implementations, a first feed item including first data is received, and a second feed item including second data is received. In some instances, presentation information is generated indicating that the second feed item is capable of being displayed on the display device in a spatial relationship with the first feed item, where the spatial relationship is independent of a linear presentation of the feed items in the information feed. In some instances, generated presentation information includes a first presentation and a second presentation, where the first presentation indicates that the second feed item is capable of being displayed on the display device in a spatial relationship with the first feed item, and the second presentation is different from the first presentation.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for presentation of feed items in an information feed to be displayed on a display device, the method comprising:

receiving a first feed item, the first feed item including first data, the first feed item capable of being stored on one or more storage mediums, the first feed item capable of being provided for inclusion in the information feed to be displayed on the display device;

receiving a second feed item, the second feed item including second data, the second feed item capable of being stored on the one or more storage mediums;

generating presentation information indicating that the second feed item is capable of being displayed on the display device in a spatial relationship with the first feed item, the spatial relationship being independent of a linear presentation of the feed items in the information feed; and

storing the presentation information on the one or more storage mediums.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining an association between the second feed item and the first feed item, the spatial relationship being in accordance with the determined association.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 2, wherein the presentation information indicates a graphical representation of the association between the second feed item and the first feed item when displayed on the display device.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 3, wherein the graphical representation includes one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

a graphical line linking the second feed item and the first feed item, a cluster including the second feed item and the first feed item, a shared color of the second feed item and the first feed item, and a shared highlight of the second feed item and the first feed item.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 2, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining a relevance measure of the second feed item to the first feed item.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 2, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes one or more operations selected from the group consisting of:

identifying an author of the second feed item, identifying a source of the second feed item, identifying a type of the second feed item, identifying a user associated with the second feed item, identifying a group associated with the second feed item, identifying a timestamp of the second feed item, identifying an attachment to the second feed item, identifying at least a part of the first data as being included in the second data, identifying a number of characters in the second data, identifying a type of the second data, identifying a number of feedback responses to the second feed item, and identifying a number of indications of personal preference submitted in response to the second feed item, determining whether one or more further feed items associated with the second feed item have been received, determining whether one or more personal preference indications associated with the second feed item have been received, identifying a number of users submitting feedback responses to the second feed item, identifying a status of the second feed item as private or public, identifying an indication of publishing or re-publishing of the second feed item, and identifying an indication of sharing of the second feed item.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 2, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining that the second feed item is submitted in direct response to the first feed item.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 2, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining that the second feed item is submitted in indirect response to the first feed item.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 2, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining that the second data includes designated information.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 9, wherein the designated information includes one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

a character, a word, a phrase, an expression, a command, a user ID, an email address, a URL address, a hyperlink, a header, and a flag.

11. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the spatial relationship includes a distance between the second feed item and the first feed item when displayed on the display device.

12. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the spatial relationship includes a spatial region in which the second feed item is situated when displayed on the display device.

13. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the linear presentation of the feed items is chronological.

14. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the first feed item data is associated with a first record stored on the one or more storage mediums.

15. The computer implemented method of claim 14, wherein the second feed item data is associated with the first record or a second record stored on the one or more storage mediums.

16. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein storing the first feed item on the one or more storage mediums includes:

storing the first feed item in a database table.

17. The computer implemented method of claim 16, wherein storing the second feed item on the one or more storage mediums includes:

storing the second feed item in the database table.

18. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the information feed is a part of an online social network.

19. The computer implemented method of claim 18, wherein the online social network is specific to a business organization.

20. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating the information feed; and

transmitting the information feed to the display device.

21. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the one or more storage mediums are included in a multi-tenant database accessible to a plurality of entities in an on-demand computing services environment.

22. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein one or more of the feed items include a message.

23. The computer implemented method of claim 22, wherein the message includes one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

a post, a comment, audio data, video data, a status update, an uploaded file, a link to a file, a link to a web page, a link to a record, and an indication of a personal preference.

24. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein one or more of the feed items include a feed tracked update.

25. One or more computing devices for presentation of feed items in an information feed to be displayed on a display device, the one or more computing devices comprising:

one or more processors operable to execute one or more instructions to;

receive a first feed item, the first feed item including first data;

store the first feed item on one or more storage mediums, the first feed item capable of being provided for inclusion in the information feed to be displayed on the display device;

receive a second feed item, the second feed item including second data;

store the second feed item on the one or more storage mediums;

generate presentation information indicating that the second feed item is capable of being displayed on the display device in a spatial relationship with the first feed item, the spatial relationship being independent of a linear presentation of the feed items in the information feed; and

store the presentation information on the one or more storage mediums.

26. The one or more computing devices of claim 25, wherein the one or more processors are further operable to execute one or more instructions to:

determine an association between the second feed item and the first feed item, the spatial relationship being in accordance with the determined association.

27. The one or more computing devices of claim 26, wherein the presentation information indicates a graphical representation of the association between the second feed item and the first feed item when displayed on the display device.

28. The one or more computing devices of claim 27, wherein the graphical representation includes one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

a graphical line linking the second feed item and the first feed item, a cluster including the second feed item and the first feed item, a shared color of the second feed item and the first feed item, and a shared highlight of the second feed item and the first feed item.

29. The one or more computing devices of claim 25, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining a relevance measure of the second feed item to the first feed item.

30. The one or more computing devices of claim 25, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining that the second data includes designated information.

31. The one or more computing devices of claim 25, wherein the spatial relationship includes a distance between the second feed item and the first feed item when displayed on the display device.

32. The one or more computing devices of claim 25, wherein the spatial relationship includes a spatial region in which the second feed item is situated when displayed on the display device.

33. A non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium storing instructions executable by a computing device to perform a method for presentation of feed items in an information feed to be displayed on a display device, the method comprising:

receiving a first feed item, the first feed item including first data;

storing the first feed item on one or more storage mediums, the first feed item capable of being provided for inclusion in the information feed to be displayed on the display device;

receiving a second feed item, the second feed item including second data;

storing the second feed item on the one or more storage mediums;

determining an association between the second feed item and the first feed item;

generating presentation information indicating that the second feed item is capable of being displayed on the display device in a spatial relationship with the first feed item, the spatial relationship being in accordance with the determined association between the second feed item and the first feed item and being independent of a linear presentation of the feed items in the information feed; and

storing the presentation information on the one or more storage mediums.

34. The non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium of claim 33, the method further comprising:

determining an association between the second feed item and the first feed item, the spatial relationship being in accordance with the determined association.

35. The non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium of claim 34, wherein the presentation information indicates a graphical representation of the association between the second feed item and the first feed item when displayed on the display device.

36. The non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium of claim 35, wherein the graphical representation includes one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

a graphical line linking the second feed item and the first feed item, a cluster including the second feed item and the first feed item, a shared color of the second feed item and the first feed item, and a shared highlight of the second feed item and the first feed item.

37. The non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium of claim 34, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining a relevance measure of the second feed item to the first feed item.

38. The non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium of claim 34, wherein determining the association between the second feed item and the first feed item includes:

determining that the second data includes designated information.

39. The non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium of claim 33, wherein the spatial relationship includes a distance between the second feed item and the first feed item when displayed on the display device.

40. The non-transitory tangible computer-readable storage medium of claim 33, wherein the spatial relationship includes a spatial region in which the second feed item is situated when displayed on the display device.
