Abstract

A cannula for transferring a substance to and/or from a patient includes a tubular support sleeve and a transfer tube. The support sleeve includes a rigid tubular member defining a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end of the tubular member. The transfer tube is positioned in the lumen and extends beyond each of the proximal end and the distal end of the tubular member. The tubular member includes a rigid, MRI-compatible material.

Claims

1. A cannula for transferring a substance to and/or from a patient, the cannula comprising:

a tubular support sleeve including a rigid tubular member defining a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end of the tubular member; and

a transfer tube positioned in the lumen and extending beyond each of the proximal end and the distal end of the tubular member;

wherein the tubular member comprises a rigid, MRI-compatible material.

2. The cannula of claim 1 wherein the tubular member comprises a ceramic material.

3. The cannula of claim 1 including a conformal polymeric sleeve surrounding the tubular member.

4. The cannula of claim 3 wherein the conformal polymeric sleeve is an elastomeric shrink tubing.

5. The cannula of claim 1 wherein an exterior surface of the cannula has at least first and second co-axially disposed segments having different outer diameters.

6. The cannula of claim 5 wherein the exterior surface includes a tapered transition between the first and second segments.

7. The cannula of claim 1 including a second tubular member disposed in the first tubular member and extending beyond the distal end of the first tubular member, wherein the transfer tube extends beyond a distal end of the second tubular member.

8. The cannula of claim 1 wherein the transfer tube is formed of fused silica.

9. The cannula of claim 1 wherein the tubular member has a length of at least 10 inches.

10. The cannula of claim 1 wherein an outer surface of the tubular member has a size and geometry adapted for use with a stereotactic frame.

35. The cannula of claim 1 wherein the transfer tube has an inner diameter of about 200 micrometers.

36. The cannula of claim 1 wherein:

an exterior surface of the cannula has at least first, second and third co-axially disposed segments having different outer diameters, the outer diameter of the second segment being greater than the outer diameter of the first segment and the outer diameter of the third segment being greater than the outer diameter of the second segment;

the first segment extends from the distal terminus of the cannula from which the substance is dispensed in use;

the second segment extends between and adjoins each of the first and third segments; and

the length of the second segment is about 15 mm.

37. The cannula of claim 1 including a silicone or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) protective tubing extending from the proximal end of the tubular support sleeve and surrounding the portion of the transfer tube extending beyond the proximal end of the tubular support sleeve.

38. A method of transferring a substance to and/or from a patient, the method comprising:

providing a cannula including;

a tubular support sleeve including a rigid tubular member defining a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end of the tubular member; and

a transfer tube positioned in the lumen and extending beyond each of the proximal end and the distal end of the tubular member;

wherein the tubular member comprises a rigid, MRI-compatible material;

inserting the cannula into a selected region in the patient; and

transferring the substance to or from the selected region through the lumen.

39. The method of claim 38 wherein transferring the substance to or from the selected region includes delivering the substance to the selected region through the lumen.

40. The method of claim 38 wherein the selected region is the brain.

41. A cannula for transferring a substance to and/or from a patient, the cannula comprising:

a tubular support sleeve including a rigid tubular member defining a lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end of the tubular member;

wherein an exterior surface of the cannula has at least first and second co-axially disposed segments having different outer diameters; and

wherein the tubular member comprises a ceramic material.

42. The cannula of claim 41 including a conformal polymeric sleeve surrounding the tubular member.

43. The cannula of claim 41 including a second tubular member disposed in the first tubular member and extending beyond the distal end of the first tubular member, wherein the transfer tube extends beyond a distal end of the second tubular member.

44. The cannula of claim 41 wherein the transfer tube is formed of fused silica.
