Abstract

A method for managing configuration of an environment of composite configuration items (Cls) is disclosed. The method may include periodically obtaining snapshots of the configuration of an environment. The method may also include logging the snapshots of the configuration of the environment in composite Cl level. The method may further include causing display of configuration information relating to a first snapshot of the snapshots in composite Cl level, while indicating configuration changes in that snapshot with respect to a second earlier snapshot of said snapshots.

Claims

1. A method for managing configuration of an environment of composite configuration items (Cls), the method comprising:

periodically obtaining snapshots of the configuration of an environment;

logging the snapshots of the configuration of the environment in composite configuration item (Cl) level; and

causing a display of configuration information relating to a first snapshot of the snapshots in composite Cl level, while indicating configuration changes in that snapshot with respect to a second earlier snapshot of said snapshots.

The method of claim 1, wherein the step of displaying the configuration information of the composite Cls relating to the one of the snapshots comprises displaying a compliance status indication corresponding to a compliance status of the composite Cls with respect to configuration compliance rules.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the compliance status indication is selected from the group of compliance status indications consisting of compliant with configuration policy, non-compliant with configuration policy, confirmed request for a change and unconfirmed request for a change.

4. The method of claim 1, comprising allowing user to select an attribute filter, and filtering the configuration information to display only the configuration information corresponding to the selected attribute filter.

5. The method of claim 4, comprising displaying a topological representation of the composite Cls corresponding to the filtered configuration information.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of periodically obtaining snapshots of the configuration of an environment comprises automatically obtaining the snapshots when configuration changes occur.

7. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing instructions that when executed cause a processor to execute the steps of:

periodically obtaining snapshots of the configuration of an environment;

logging the snapshots of the configuration of the environment in composite Cl level; and

causing a display of configuration information relating to a first snapshot of the snapshots in composite Cl level, while indicating configuration changes in that snapshot with respect to a second earlier snapshot of said snapshots.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the step of displaying the configuration information of the composite Cls relating to the one of the snapshots comprises displaying a compliance status indication corresponding to a compliance status of the composite Cls with respect to configuration compliance rules.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8, wherein the compliance status indication is selected from the group of compliance status indications consisting of compliant with configuration policy, non-compliant with configuration policy, confirmed request for a change and unconfirmed request for a change.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7, further containing instructions that when executed cause a processor to execute the steps of allowing user to select an attribute filter, and filtering the configuration information to display only the configuration information corresponding to the selected attribute filter.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10, further containing instructions that when executed cause a processor to execute the step of displaying a topological representation of the composite Cls corresponding to the filtered configuration information.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the step of periodically obtaining snapshots of the configuration of an environment comprises automatically obtaining the snapshots when configuration changes occur.

13. A data processing system comprising:

a processing unit in communication with a computer readable medium, wherein the computer readable medium contains a set of instructions wherein the processing unit is designed to carry out the set of instructions to;

periodically obtain snapshots of the configuration of an environment;

log the snapshots of the configuration of the environment in composite Cl level;

provide a graphical user interface (GUI) to allow a user to select two of the snapshots and display configuration information relating to a first snapshot of the two snapshots in composite Cl level, while indicating configuration changes in that snapshot with respect to a second earlier snapshot of said two snapshots.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the GUI includes one or more compliance status indicators corresponding to a compliance status of the composite Cls with respect to configuration compliance rules.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the compliance status indication is selected from the group of compliance status indications consisting of compliant with configuration policy, non-compliant with configuration policy, confirmed request for a change and unconfirmed request for a change.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein the GUI includes one or more filter fields to allow user to select an attribute filter, so as to display only the configuration information corresponding to the selected attribute filter.

17. The system of claim 13, wherein the GUI includes a topological representation of the composite Cls corresponding to the filtered configuration information.

18. The system of claim 13, wherein the step of periodically obtaining snapshots of the configuration of an environment comprises automatically obtaining the snapshots when configuration changes occur.

19. The system of claim 13, wherein the GUI includes detailed information about the configuration changes.
