METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR ADDING A TRANSACTION INSTRUMENT TO A LOYALTY CAMPAIGN

1. A method for adding a transaction instrument of a customer to a loyalty campaign during a transaction occurring at a point of sale, the method performed by a computer system and comprising the steps of:
- obtaining, from a point of sale device, a mobile device identifier corresponding to a mobile device of the customer;
obtaining, from a point of sale device, transaction information including a transaction account identifier corresponding to a transaction instrument of the customer;
searching a database for the mobile device identifier;
determining, upon locating the mobile device identifier in the database, whether the transaction account identifier is associated with the mobile device identifier;
storing, if it is determined that the transaction account identifier is not associated with the mobile device identifier, the transaction account identifier in the database in association with the mobile device identifier; and
providing to the customer, upon obtaining at least one of the transaction account identifier and the mobile device identifier in a subsequent transaction, a loyalty benefit comprising at least one of a free item, a discount on a purchase, and loyalty points applicable to a purchase.

Abstract
A loyalty gateway (130) obtains, from a point of sale device (120), a mobile device identifier corresponding to a mobile device (110) of a customer and transaction information including a transaction account identifier corresponding to a transaction instrument (115) of the customer. The loyalty gateway (130) searches a database (135) for the mobile device identifier and, upon locating the mobile device identifier in the database (135), stores the transaction account identifier in the database (135) in association with the mobile device identifier upon determining that the transaction account identifier is not associated with the mobile device identifier. In a subsequent transaction, upon obtaining the transaction account identifier or the mobile device identifier, the loyalty gateway (130) provides a loyalty benefit such as a free item, a discount on a purchase, or loyalty points applicable to a purchase.
