Abstract

Various embodiments are disclosed for a services policy communication system and method. In some embodiments, a communications device implements a service profile for assisting control of the communications device use of a service on a network, in which the service profile includes service policy settings, and the service profile is associated with an ambient service plan that provides for initial access to the service with limited service capabilities prior to activation of a new service plan; and monitors use of the service based on the service profile.

Claims

1. An end-user device comprising:

a modem for enabling the end-user device to access one or more network communication end points over a wireless access network;

a user interface;

memory configured to store a service policy associated with a particular service activity of a plurality of service activities available to the end-user device, the service policy configured to;

assist in charging a sponsor entity for at least a portion of a wireless-access-network usage cost or usage measure associated with the particular service activity over the wireless access network, the sponsor entity being an entity other than a user of the particular end-user device and other than an operator of the wireless access network, and

assist in presenting a notification through the user interface; and

one or more processors configured to;

monitor end-user device data traffic,

identify an attempted or successful data communication over the wireless access network associated with the particular service activity in the end-user device data traffic, and

in response to identifying the attempted or successful data communication over the wireless access network associated with the particular service activity, apply the service policy.

2. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the notification comprises an offer or an advertisement associated with the particular service activity.

3. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the notification comprises information associated with a roaming condition.

The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the notification comprises a transaction purchase option associated with the particular service activity, and the one or more processors are further configured to assist in obtaining a user response to the transaction purchase option through the user interface.

The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the notification comprises a service plan option, and the one or more processors are further configured to assist in obtaining a user response to the service plan option through the user interface, and assist in sending the user response to a network element.

The end-user device recited in claim 5, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to assist in establishing a secure control link between the device and the network element, the secure control link secured by an encryption protocol and configured to support control-plane communications between the device and the network element, and wherein sending the user response to the network element comprises sending the user response to the network element over the secure control link.

7. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

obtain a user preference through the user interface, and

determine an aspect of the service policy based on the user preference.

8. A first end-user device comprising:

a first modem for enabling the first end-user device to access one or more network communication end points over a wireless access network;

a second modem for enabling the first end-user device to communicate with one or more other end-user devices over a local-area network;

memory configured to store a service policy associated with a particular service activity of a plurality of service activities available to the first end-user device, the service policy configured to assist in charging a sponsor entity for at least a portion of a wireless-access-network usage cost or usage measure associated with the particular service activity over the wireless access network, the sponsor entity being an entity other than a user of the first end-user device and other than an operator of the wireless access network; and

one or more processors configured to;

monitor first-end-user-device data traffic,

identify an attempted or successful data communication over the wireless access network associated with the particular service activity in the first-end-user-device data traffic,

in response to identifying the attempted or successful data communication over the wireless access network associated with the particular service activity, apply the service policy, and

assist in providing an intermediate networking device forwarding service for forwarding traffic between a particular end-user device of the one or more other end-user devices and at least one of the one or more network communication end points.

The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the service policy is configured to provide a user interface of the first end-user device or a user interface of the particular end-user device with information configured to assist the particular end-user device in acquiring access to the intermediate networking device forwarding service.

10. The first end-user device recited in claim 9, wherein the information configured to assist the particular end-user device in acquiring access to the intermediate networking device forwarding service comprises an offer for a paid service comprising a second service activity.

11. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the particular service activity comprises an attempt by a user of the first end-user device or the particular end-user device to use the intermediate networking device forwarding service when the particular end-user device is not authorized to use the intermediate networking device forwarding service.

12. The first end-user device recited in claim 11, wherein the service policy is configured to direct the particular end-user device to a particular network communication end point of the one or more network communication end points.

13. The first end-user device recited in claim 12, wherein the particular network communication end point is configured to provide the particular end-user device with a service plan option associated with the intermediate networking device forwarding service.

14. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the particular service activity comprises a communication associated with an enterprise service, a website access, an advertisement, a content service, an online shopping service, a transactional service, a machine to machine service, or a roaming service.

15. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the service policy is further configured to assist in controlling an access to the wireless access network associated with the particular service activity.

16. The first end-user device recited in claim 15, wherein controlling the access to the wireless access network associated with the particular service activity comprises directing one or more communications associated with the particular end-user device to a particular network route, a particular network tunnel, or a particular network communication end point of the one or more network communication end points.

17. The first end-user device recited in claim 15, wherein controlling the access to the wireless access network associated with the particular service activity comprises blocking, allowing, throttling, traffic shaping, quarantining, or delaying the particular service activity.

18. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to limit the number of other end-user devices authorized to use the intermediate networking device forwarding service.

19. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to provide differentiated services to the one or more other end-user devices.

20. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the sponsor entity is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), a machine to machine service provider, or a virtual service provider (VSP).

21. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the sponsor entity is an enterprise, a website provider, an advertiser, an operator of a content download service, an operator of an online shopping site, a transactional service provider, or a roaming service provider.

22. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the wireless access network is a 2G network, a 3G network, or a 4G network.

23. The first end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the local-area network is a wireless fidelity (WiFi) network, a Bluetooth network, or an Ethernet network.
