Abstract

Systems and techniques are provided for managing an interface between a machine or work vehicle and a surface that the machine/work vehicle travels on in order to provide an optimum work performance level that balances fuel efficiency and surface adversity. Fleet management and reporting capabilities pertaining to such interface management are also provided.

Claims

1. A method for managing a fleet of vehicles, comprising steps of:

determining vehicle data associated with a vehicle of the fleet of vehicles;

determining environmental data for an environment proximate to the vehicle;

determining at least one virtual foot parameter of the vehicle, wherein the at least one virtual foot parameter is associated with a virtual foot of the vehicle comprising at least one of a wheel, a track, a track wheel, an inflatable tire, a tire with shape adjustment using magneto-rheological materials, a tire with shape adjustment using electro-rheological materials and a wheel which change footprint; and

transmitting the vehicle data, the environmental data and the at least one virtual foot parameter to a remote data processing system.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising a step of:

receiving vehicle operating instructions pertaining to the vehicle from the remote data processing system.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

adjusting the at least one virtual foot parameter of the vehicle based on the received vehicle operating instructions.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein adjusting the at least one virtual foot parameter comprises at least one of changing a tire pressure, changing a shape of a ground contacting element, and changing a number of ground contacting elements contacting a surface.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein adjusting the at least one virtual foot parameter comprises changing a shape of a ground contacting element that comprises at least one of magneto-rheological and electro-rheological materials.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the vehicle operating instructions comprises at least one of assigning the vehicle to a mission, replacing the virtual foot, and adjusting the virtual foot.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the vehicle comprises a plurality of the virtual foot that is each independently controlled when improving stabilization of the vehicle.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the virtual foot includes tire pressure and temperature sensors.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein data associated with the tire pressure and temperature sensors are included in the at least one virtual foot parameter that is transmitted to the remote data processing system.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein each step is performed for each vehicle in the fleet of vehicles.

11. A fleet management system, comprising a data processor coupled to a memory comprising instructions for performing steps of:

determining vehicle data associated with a vehicle of a fleet of vehicles;

determining environmental data for an environment proximate to the vehicle;

determining at least one virtual foot parameter of the vehicle, wherein the at least one virtual foot parameter is associated with a virtual foot of the vehicle comprising at least one of a wheel, a track, a track wheel, an inflatable tire, a tire with shape adjustment using magneto-rheological materials, a tire with shape adjustment using electro-rheological materials and a wheel which change footprint; and

transmitting the vehicle data, the environmental data and the at least one virtual foot parameter to a remote data processing system.

12. The fleet management system of claim 11, further comprising a step of:

receiving vehicle operating instructions pertaining to the vehicle from the remote data processing system.

13. The fleet management system of claim 12, further comprising:

adjusting the at least one virtual foot parameter of the vehicle based on the received vehicle operating instructions.

14. The fleet management system of claim 13, wherein adjusting the at least one virtual foot parameter comprises at least one of changing a tire pressure, changing a shape of a ground contacting element, and changing a number of ground contacting elements contacting a surface.

15. The fleet management system of claim 13, wherein adjusting the at least one virtual foot parameter comprises changing a shape of a ground contacting element that comprises at least one of magneto-rheological and electro-rheological materials.

16. The fleet management system of claim 12, wherein the vehicle operating instructions comprises at least one of assigning the vehicle to a mission, replacing the virtual foot, and adjusting the virtual foot.

17. The fleet management system of claim 11, wherein the vehicle comprises a plurality of the virtual foot that is each independently controlled when improving stabilization of the vehicle.

18. The fleet management system of claim 11, wherein the virtual foot includes tire pressure and temperature sensors.

19. The fleet management system of claim 18, wherein data associated with the tire pressure and temperature sensors are included in the at least one virtual foot parameter that is transmitted to the remote data processing system.

20. The fleet management system of claim 11, wherein each step is performed for each vehicle in the fleet of vehicles.
