Abstract

A machine tooth for heavy equipment can be monitored by coupling an RFID tag to the heavy machine tooth and positioning an RFID reader to read the RFID tag. The RFID reader provides an indication that the heavy machine tooth is separated from the heavy machine. The heavy machine tooth is configured, for example, to be mounted on a bucket of a heavy machine.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring a heavy machine tooth , the method comprising:

coupling an RFID tag to the heavy machine tooth; and

positioning an RFID reader to read the RFID tag;

wherein the RFID reader provides an indication that the heavy machine tooth is separated from the heavy machine.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising encasing the RFID tag in ceramic, the ceramic placed in a mold, and liquid steel is poured into the mold to form the heavy machine tooth.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising positioning the RFID reader at a feeder to a crusher.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising positioning the RFID reader to detect when the RFID tag is in a truck.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID tag is attached to an end of the tooth.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining the tooth is separated from the bucket when a signal strength of the RFID tag increases.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising inserting the RFID tag in a hole in the tooth.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising coupling a tuning circuit to the RFID tag, the tuning circuit tuning the RFID tag after the RFID tag is coupled to the tooth.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising detuning the RFID tag.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising tuning the RFID tag by coupling the RFID tag to the tooth.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising magnifying a signal from the RFID tag by backscattering.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising coupling a wear detection circuit to the RFID tag.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising detecting wear of the tooth and providing information on the detected wear of the tooth to the RFID tag.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising using a four point resistance method to detect wear of the tooth.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising positioning the RFID reader in a cab of the heavy machine.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing, by the RFID reader, information about the heavy machine tooth to a user of the heavy machine.

18. A heavy machine tooth monitoring system, the system comprising:

a heavy machine tooth configured to be mounted on a bucket of a heavy machine;

an active RFID tag coupled to the tooth; and

an RFID reader configured to read data from the RFID tag.

19. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, wherein the RFID reader is positioned at a feeder to a crusher.

20. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, wherein the RFID reader is positioned to detect an RFID tag in a truck.

21. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, wherein the RFID tag is encased in ceramic.

22. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, wherein the RFID tag is attached to an end of the tooth.

23. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, wherein the RFID tag is inserted in a hole in the tooth.

24. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, further comprising a turning circuit, the tuning circuit tuning the RFID tag after the RFID tag is coupled to the tooth.

25. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, further comprising a wear detection circuit, wherein the wear detection circuit detects wear of the tooth and provides information on the detected wear of the tooth to the RFID tag.

26. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 25, wherein the wear detection circuit uses a four-point resistance method to detect wear of the tooth.

27. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 26, wherein the RFID tag is embedded in a ceramic plug that is inserted in the tooth, and wherein four probes in electrical communication with the new detection circuit extend from the plug and are in electrical contact with the tooth.

28. The heavy machine tooth monitoring system of claim 18, wherein the RFID reader is positioned in a cab of the heavy machine, and provides information about the heavy machine tooth to a user of the heavy machine.
