Abstract

A system for remotely reviewing medical data allows medical data to be transmitted to a nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device from medical equipment or data storage. The system includes a console, a data server and mobile handheld devices; the data server may be a software component within the console. The system may further include medical imaging equipment, medical records databases, and other sensors and servers. Medical data is routed through the console to the data server to reach the mobile handheld device via a wireless network. After reviewing the data, nurses may transmit their comments from their mobile handheld device to the requester by going through the same system. The data server may further include a resident messaging system that communicates to the mobile handheld device such that the user is notified of messages or data awaiting review along with the urgency of the required review are also described.

Claims

1. A system for communicating medical record of a patient to a nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device, comprising:

a medical data system configured to collect medical data;

a console comprising a processor coupled to a network;

a mobile device; and

a server coupled to the network,

wherein the console processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

receiving a diagnostic image for the patient;

accessing the medical record of the patient;

receiving an operator input selecting a portion of the medical record and the diagnostic image for transmission to the mobile device;

separating the selected portion of the medical record and the diagnostic image into a plurality of layers including a demographic layer comprising demographic information selected from the medical record and a data layer comprising medical data and the selected first portion of the diagnostic image;

encrypting the demographic layer using a first encryption key;

encrypting the data layer using a second encryption key, wherein the second encryption key is different from the first encryption key; and

sending the encrypted demographic layer and data layer to the server,

wherein the server is configured to perform operations comprising;

receiving the layers from the console;

decrypting the data layer;

performing an operation on the data layer;

re-encrypting the data layer;

sending the encrypted demographic layer and re-encrypted data layer as a medical data message to the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device via a wireless network;

notifying a hyper text transport protocol (HTTP) polling response module of availability of the medical data message; and

transmitting the medical data message to the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device via a wireless network in response to HTTP polling from the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the medical data system is a medical diagnostic device.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the medical data system is an electronic medical records database.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the medical device comprises one of an electrocardiogram system, an imaging system, and a system designed to measure physiological variables.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein the console is a software program operating on the medical diagnostic device.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is a software program integrated within the console.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is a software program integrated within a medical imaging system.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the medical data system is contained within an ambulance.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is configured to perform operations further comprising:

processing images to match display characteristics of the mobile handheld device; and

transmitting the processed images to the mobile handheld device.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the server is configured to perform operations further comprising:

receiving an image request from the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device; and

processing images in accordance with parameters contained in the received image request.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is configured to perform operations further comprising:

recognizing a pattern or feature within the medical data; and

automatically taking actions based upon the recognized pattern or feature.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the server is configured to perform operations such that automatically taking actions based upon the recognized pattern or feature comprises recalling patient data relevant to the recognized pattern or feature.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is configured to perform operations further comprising:

determining a potential diagnosis by recognizing a pattern or feature within the medical data;

automatically recalling patient data relevant to the determined potential diagnosis; and

transmitting to the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device the recalled patient data.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is configured to perform operations further comprising:

recognizing a pattern within data being sent to the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device; and

automatically obtaining additional data that is relevant to the recognized pattern.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is configured to perform operations further comprising rendering a three-dimensional medical data set so an image can be displayed on the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device as an isometric image.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is configured to perform operations further comprising rendering a three-dimensional medical data set so a movie can be displayed on the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device as a rotating isometric movie.

17. A method for communicating a patient medical file of a patient to a mobile handheld device for remote review of the medical data, said medical file including personal demographic information, medical data and a diagnostic image, the method comprising:

separating the patient medical file into a plurality of layers including a demographic layer comprising the demographic information and a data layer comprising the medical data and the diagnostic image;

selecting a portion of the data layer including at least a portion of the diagnostic image on a console;

encrypting the demographic layer using a first encryption key;

encrypting the data layer using a second encryption key, wherein the second encryption key is different from the first encryption key;

sending the encrypted demographic layer and data layer to a server that is capable of decrypting one of the encrypted demographic layer or the data layer but not both;

decrypting the data layer at the server;

performing an operation on the decrypted data layer comprising selecting a second portion of the diagnostic image;

re-encrypting at least a portion of the processed data layer including the selected second portion of the image;

transmitting the encrypted demographic layer and re-encrypting data layer to a mobile handheld device;

sending a message from the server to the mobile handheld device notifying availability of the selected data, wherein the mobile handheld device is at a location remote from the console;

reviewing the selected data on the mobile handheld device;

receiving a message from the mobile handheld device at the server; and

forwarding at least a portion of the received message from the server to the console.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

processing images to match display characteristics of the mobile handheld device; and

transmitting the processed images to the mobile handheld device.

19. The system of claim 18, further comprising:

receiving an image request from the nurse'"'"'s mobile handheld device; and

processing images in accordance with parameters contained in the received image request.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

recognizing a pattern or feature within the medical data; and

automatically taking actions based upon the recognized pattern or feature.
