Abstract

Embodiments of an appliance and method utilize data keys to facilitate the exchange of data and information among devices as part of an energy management system. The data keys contain and/or encode information particular to the appliance. This information helps to distinguish data that originates from one appliance from data that originates from other appliances in the household. In one embodiment, the data keys are stored locally, either on devices (e.g., memory) incorporated into the appliance or on a communication device (e.g., a wireless radio) that can connect to the appliance to permit the exchange of inputs and outputs. Exemplary configuration of the appliance can sense the connection with the communication device and provide an input to the communication device to determine the data key that is associated with the appliance.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

at an appliance;

sensing a connection with a communication device;

transmitting an input to the communication device; and

selecting a data key in response to the input,

wherein the data key comprises information that identifies the appliance.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating an output with the data key.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining whether a data key is available on memory of the appliance.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the input comprises the data key.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the data key comprises information that is unique to the appliance to which the device is connected.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the data key comprises a first data key and a second data key that are stored on memory on the communication device, and wherein the input identifies either the first data key or the second data key.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the first data key and the second data key are associated with appliance of different types.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the data key comprises a feature credential that identifies a feature of the appliance.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the feature credential comprises a certificate that is defined by one or more industry standards.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the feature credential identifies the appliance by type.

11. An appliance, comprising:

a port through which data can be transmitted and received; and

a control circuit coupled to the port, the control circuit comprising a first circuit to sense a connection with a communication device at the port,

wherein the control circuit can generate an input in response to the connection, and

wherein the input determines a data key that comprises information that identifies the appliance.

12. The appliance of claim 11, wherein the data key comprises one or more of a feature credential and a security credential.

13. The appliance of claim 11, further comprising a memory coupled to the control circuit, wherein the data key can be stored on the memory.

14. The appliance of claim 11, wherein the data key can be stored on the communication device.

15. The appliance of claim 11, wherein the input comprises the data key, and wherein the control circuit transmits the data key to the communication device via the port.
