Abstract

A method and apparatus within a computing execution environment for establishing monitoring of an instance of a context for an observer, including receiving, from a PAL client, a message at the PAL server, the message; requesting establishment of a presence context; resolving an aspect based on the message to establish the presence context, the presence context providing a simplified or abstracted view of presence information on behalf of the PAL client; and placing the presence context into at least one of a monitoring state and a monitoring-capable state if a trigger is associated with the aspect.

Claims

1. A method performed by a presence access layer (PAL) server, comprising:

receiving a message at the PAL server from a PAL client, the message requesting establishment of a presence context which is configured to provide abstracted presence information on behalf of the PAL client;

resolving an aspect based on the message to establish the presence context; and

configuring the presence context in a monitoring-capable state when a trigger is associated with the aspect.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

monitoring the aspect for a change in a value of the aspect when the message specifies the aspect and a target.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

receiving another message at the PAL server from the PAL client after the resolving, the another message requesting the value of the aspect,

wherein the another message causes the presence context to transition from the monitoring-capable state to a monitoring state.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein monitoring is performed for a specified duration.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

transitioning the presence context from the monitoring state to the monitoring-capable state upon expiration of the specified duration.

6. The method of claim 2 wherein the target is a presentity or a buddy list.

7. The method of claim 3 further comprising:

performing a predefined action after the configuring relative to at least one of the aspect and the trigger when the presence context is in the monitoring state.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the predefined action comprises sending an asynchronous notification to the PAL client relative to the aspect having a changed value.

9. A computing device comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive a message from a presence access layer (PAL) client, the message requesting establishment of a presence context which is configured to provide abstracted presence information on behalf of the PAL client; and

a processor configured to execute a PAL server agent for resolving an aspect based on the message to establish the presence context, and for configuring the presence context in a monitoring-capable state when a trigger is associated with the aspect.

10. The computing device of claim 9 wherein the processor is further configured to execute the PAL server agent for monitoring the aspect for a change in a value of the aspect when the message specifies the aspect and a target.

11. The computing device of claim 10 wherein the processor is further configured to execute the PAL server agent for:

receiving another message at the PAL server from the PAL client after resolving the aspect, the another message requesting the value of the aspect,

wherein the another message causes the presence context to transition from the monitoring-capable state to a monitoring state.

12. The computing device of claim 11 wherein the PAL server is configured to perform monitoring of the aspect for a specified duration.

13. The computing device of claim 12 wherein the processor is further configured to execute the PAL server agent for transitioning the presence context from the monitoring state to the monitoring-capable state upon expiration of the specified duration.

14. The computing device of claim 10 wherein the target is a presentity or a buddy list.

15. The computing device of claim 11 wherein the processor is further configured to execute the PAL server agent for performing a predefined action after the configuring relative to at least one of the aspect and the trigger when the presence context is in the monitoring state.

16. The computing device of claim 15 wherein the predefined action comprises sending an asynchronous notification to the PAL client relative to the aspect having a changed value.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions thereon which, when executed, cause a computing device to execute a presence access layer (PAL) server configured to perform a method of:

receiving a message at the PAL server from a PAL client, the message requesting establishment of a presence context which is configured to provide abstracted presence information on behalf of the PAL client;

resolving an aspect based on the message to establish the presence context; and

configuring the presence context in a monitoring-capable state when a trigger is associated with the aspect.
