- A method to produce a protective coating on a substrate surface containing at least one active species comprising applying an alcoholic solution of a phosphate oxide or ester and an aluminum salt in which the Al/P atomic ratio is 0.2 to 0.8 to a substrate having an active species surface, drying and curing the applied solution to form a primary layer and further applying to the primary layer an alcoholic solution of a phosphorus oxide or ester and an aluminum salt in which the Al/P atomic ratio is at least 1 and drying and curing the applied solution to form a secondary layer.
