Abstract

A device for locating and retrieving a misplaced foreign body that has metallic characteristics includes a shaft connected to a handle and a retrieval tool that is coupled to the shaft and moves between a deployed position and collapsed position. The tool has a magnetic element that generates a magnetic field, wherein the magnetic field extends over a greater area in the deployed position and is of sufficient strength to attract the foreign body such that it is held in contact with the tool. The device can be part of an automated robotic system and can also include a metal detector to assist in locating the misplaced foreign body.

Claims

1. A device for locating and retrieving a misplaced foreign body that is formed of metal comprising:

a hollow shaft connected to a handle and including a distal end; and

a retrieval tool that is at least partially received within an interior of the hollow shaft, the retrieval tool having a movable tip portion that includes a magnetic element that generates a magnetic field, the movable tip being operatively coupled to a mechanism that is configured to move the tip portion between at least a first position and a different second position, the retrieval tool being slidably movable within the hollow shaft so as to permit the tip portion to extend beyond the distal end of the hollow shaft, the movable tip being movable to the second position only when the movable tip is completely beyond the distal end of the hollow shaft;

a metal detector that is associated with the hollow shaft and located at or proximate the distal end thereof, the metal detector being operable to detect the misplaced foreign body when it is within a prescribed distance thereof;

wherein an angle is formed between the tip portion in the second position relative to the first position;

wherein the magnetic element is in the form of an elongated magnet.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein in the first position, the tip portion is axially aligned with an adjacent main portion of the retrieval tool and is position to allow the tip portion to be received within the interior of the hollow shaft.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the tip portion is pivotable between the first and second positions.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the mechanism is configured such that linear movement of a linkage is translated into a pivoting action of the tip portion.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the angle between the tip portion in the first and second positions is between 0 and 90 degrees.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the magnetic element comprises a permanent neodymium magnet.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein the neodymium magnet has an elongated rod shape and has a diameter of at least about ⅜

inch and a length of at least about 2 inch.

The device of claim 1, wherein the retrieval tool has an actuator at a proximal end that is operatively coupled to the mechanism to allow user manipulation which is translated into a pivoting of the tip portion, the actuator being oversized to prevent reception thereof into the interior of the hollow shaft.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the first position, the shaft and retrieval tool have a width of about 10 mm or less to allow the device to be used in ports associated with minimally invasive surgery.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the metal detector includes a plurality of coils incorporated into a peripheral wall of the outer shaft so as to not interfere with passage and movement of the retrieval tool therein.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the metal detector includes at least one of an auditory feedback and a visual feedback to indicate presence of the misplaced foreign metal body.

The device of claim 11, wherein the metal detector is configured to sense an approximate distance to the misplaced foreign body when the misplaced foreign body is at least initially detected by the metal detector and the approximate distance is displayed on a display that is part of the outer sheath.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein the metal detector comprises a pico-detector.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein the metal detector has an operating (on) state and an off state to allow the retrieval tool to be advanced through the outer shaft and beyond the distal end thereof for retrieving the misplaced metal body.

15. The device of claim 1, wherein the prescribed distance is less than about 3 inches.

16. An automated robotic system for locating and retrieving a misplaced foreign body that is formed of metal comprising:

a robotic device that includes a user interface to control movements of the robotic device, wherein the robotic device includes a robotic arm;

a retrieval device that is associated with the robotic arm, wherein movements of the retrieval device are controlled by the robotic device, the retrieval device including;

a retrieval tool that moves between a deployed position and collapsed position, the tool having a magnetic element that generates a magnetic field, wherein the magnetic field extends over a greater area in the deployed position and is of sufficient strength to attract the foreign body such that it is held in contact with the tool.

17. The automated system of claim 16, wherein the retrieval device is securely attached to the robotic arm and movements of the retrieval tool are controlled by the robotic device.

The automated system of claim 16, wherein the retrieval device further includes a shaft connected to a handle, with the retrieval tool being movably received within a longitudinal cannula of the shaft, the movable tip being operatively coupled to a mechanism that is configured to move the tip portion between at least a first position and a different second position, the retrieval tool being slidably movable within the hollow shaft so as to permit the tip portion to extend beyond the distal end of the hollow shaft, the movable tip being movable to the second position only when the movable tip is completely beyond the distal end of the hollow shaft.

The automated system of claim 18, wherein the robotic device is configured to move the outer shaft in a controlled manner and based on user commands and the robotic device is further configured to independently move the retrieval tool relative to the outer shaft to allow the retrieval tool to extend beyond the distal end of the outer shaft.

20. The automated system of claim 16, wherein the mechanism that is configured such that linear movement of a linkage is translated into a pivoting action of the tip portion.

21. The automated system of claim 16, wherein the magnetic element comprises a permanent neodymium magnet.
