Abstract

A method for minimizing power consumption of a terminal during a power saving mode operation in a wireless communication system includes acquiring synchronization using a frequency used in a first paging listen interval or a frequency selected in a first paging listen interval; measuring a signal quality based on the acquired synchronization; and according to the measured signal quality, determining a length of a wake-up interval for a second paging listen interval. Thus, the terminal operating in the idle mode can minimize the power consumption of the terminal through the efficient control of the synchronization acquisition overhead interval and the frequency reselection algorithm carried out based on and the channel change.

Claims

1. A method for reducing power consumption of a terminal during a power saving mode operation in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

acquiring synchronization using a frequency used in a first paging listen interval or a frequency selected in the first paging listen interval;

measuring a signal quality based on the acquired synchronization; and

according to the measured signal quality, determining a length of a wake-up interval for a second paging listen interval.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining of the length of the wake-up interval for the second paging listen interval according to the measured signal quality comprises:

comparing a signal quality of the first paging listen interval and a signal quality of a previous paging listen interval; and

according to the comparison result, selecting one of a plurality of predefined wake-up intervals.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

according to the measured signal quality, determining state transition to determine whether to scan a signal quality of multiple frequencies,

wherein the determining of the state transition to determine whether to scan the signal quality of the multiple frequencies comprises;

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is greater than or equal to a first threshold, storing a signal quality value of the first paging listen interval without performing a frequency reselection procedure;

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is less than a second threshold, performing the frequency reselection procedure and storing the signal quality value of the first paging listen interval; and

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is greater than the second threshold and less than the first threshold, changing to a dynamic state transition region by comparing the signal quality of the first paging, listen interval and the signal quality of the previous paging listen interval.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first threshold is a maximum value of a signal quality with the state transition, and the second threshold is a minimum value of a signal quality with the state transition.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the second threshold is determined according to a maximum terminal travel speed and a terminal travel distance during a paging cycle, and the first threshold is determined as an offset of the second offset.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the changing to the dynamic state transition region by comparing the signal quality of the first paging listen interval and the signal quality of the previous paging listen interval,

7. The method of claim 6, wherein, when the is a maximum transition state, a frequency reselection procedure is performed.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the signal quality is determined as one of Received Signal Strength Indication/Indicator (RSSI), Carrier-to Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (CINR), Path Loss (PL), Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR), and Ec/No.

9. A method for reducing power consumption of a terminal during a power saving mode operation in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

acquiring synchronization using a frequency used in a first paging listen interval or a frequency selected in the first paging listen interval;

measuring a signal quality based on the acquired synchronization;

according to the measured signal quality, determining a length of a wake-up interval for a second paging listen interval; and

according to the measured signal quality, selecting a frequency to use in the second paging listen interval.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the determining of the length of the wake-up interval for the second paging listen interval according to the measured signal quality comprises:

comparing a signal quality of the first paging listen interval and a signal quality of a previous paging listen interval; and

according to the comparison result, selecting one of a plurality of predefined wake-up intervals.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the selecting of the frequency to use in the second paging listen interval according to the measured signal quality comprises:

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is greater than or equal to a first threshold, storing a signal quality value of the first paging listen interval without performing a frequency reselection procedure;

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is less than a second threshold, performing the frequency reselection procedure and storing the signal quality value of the first paging listen interval; and

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is greater than the second threshold and less than the first threshold, changing to a dynamic state transition region by comparing the signal quality of the first paging listen interval and the signal quality of the previous paging listen interval.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the first threshold is a maximum value of a signal quality with the state transition, and the second threshold is a minimum value of a signal quality with the state transition.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the second threshold is determined according to a maximum terminal travel speed and a terminal travel distance during a paging cycle, and the first threshold is determined as an offset of the second offset.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein the wake-up interval is a time interval required in a synchronization process.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the signal quality is determined as one of Received Signal Strength Indication/Indicator (RSSI), Carrier-to Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (CDIR), Path Loss (PL), Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR), and Ec/No.

16. An apparatus for reducing power consumption of a terminal during a power saving mode operation in a wireless communication system, the apparatus comprising:

a controller configured to acquire synchronization using a frequency used in a first paging listen interval or a frequency selected in the first paging listen interval; and

a signal quality measurer configured to measure a signal quality based on the acquired synchronization; and

wherein the controller is configured to determine a length of a wake-up interval for a second paging listen interval according to the measured signal quality.

The apparatus of claim 16, wherein to determine of the length of the wake-up interval for the second paging listen interval according to the measured signal quality, the controller is configured to compare a signal quality of the first paging listen interval and a signal quality of a previous paging listen interval;

and select one of a plurality of predefined wake-up intervals according to the comparison result.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the controller is configured to determine state transition to determine whether to scan a signal quality of multiple frequencies according to the measured signal quality by, when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is greater than or equal to a first threshold, storing a signal quality value of the first paging listen interval without performing a frequency reselection procedure;

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is less than a second threshold, performing the frequency reselection procedure and storing the signal quality value of the first paging listen interval; and

when the signal quality of the first paging listen interval is greater than the second threshold and less than the first threshold, changing to a dynamic state transition region by comparing the signal quality of the first paging listen interval and the signal quality of the previous paging listen interval.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the first threshold is a maximum value of a signal quality with the state transition, and the second threshold is a minimum value of a signal quality with the state transition.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the second threshold is determined according to a maximum terminal travel speed and a terminal travel distance during a paging, cycle, and the first threshold is determined as an offset of the second offset.
