Abstract

A system and method for managing video data and metadata associated with the video data is disclosed. In one embodiment, a content management system receives video data and metadata associated with the video data, such as a title, a thumbnail image and a subject matter identifier. Instructions for a media player used to present the video data using a destination site are also generated to simplify distribution of the video data to one or more destination sites. The content management system further enables a user to edit the stored video data to customize placements of advertisements or other data within the video data by identifying one or more cue points in the video data. A data store is coupled to the content management system to store the video data and the metadata associated with the video data.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for managing video data, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving video data;

receiving metadata associated with the video data;

generating data for configuring a media player to present the video data;

storing the video data, metadata associated with the video data and the data for configuring the media player in a data store;

receiving a request to access the video data, the request including search terms;

identifying the video data based on the metadata in the data store and the search terms; and

presenting the video data and the metadata associated with the video data.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting the video data, the metadata associated with the video data and the data for configuring the media player to one or more destination sites.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a modification to the metadata associated with the video data; and

storing the modification to the metadata associated with the video data in the data store.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein receiving metadata associated with the video data comprises:

identifying a plurality of images;

setting a first image from the plurality of images as a thumbnail image associated with the video data;

communicating the first image to one or more destination sites; and

receiving first analytical data describing interaction with the video data when the first image is set as the thumbnail image.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 4, wherein receiving metadata associated with the video data further comprises:

setting a second image from the plurality of frames as the thumbnail image associated with the video data;

communicating the second image to the one or more destination sites;

receiving second analytical data describing interaction with the video data when the second image is set as the thumbnail image; and

determining the thumbnail image associated with the video data based on the first analytical data and the second analytical data.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 4, wherein determining the thumbnail image associated with the video data based on the first analytical data and the second analytical data comprises:

displaying the first analytical data and the second analytical data;

receiving an input identifying the first frame or the second frame; and

setting the thumbnail image associated with the video data based on the received input.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 4, wherein identifying the plurality of images comprises:

identifying a plurality of frames from the video data.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 7, wherein identifying the plurality of frames from the video data comprises:

receiving a first input selecting the first frame; and

receiving a second input selecting the second frame.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 7, wherein identifying the plurality of frames from the video data comprises:

selecting the first frame and the second frame based on stored criteria.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 4, wherein the first analytical data includes a number of times the video data is accessed when the first image is set as the thumbnail image.

11. The computer implemented method of claim 4, wherein the second analytical data includes a number of times the video data is accessed when the second image is set as the thumbnail image.

12. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein receiving metadata associated with the video data comprises:

receiving data identifying a cue point within the video data where supplemental content is presented in place of the video data.

13. The computer implemented method of claim 11, receiving data identifying the cue point comprises:

displaying a graphical representation of the video data including frames corresponding to temporal locations within the video data;

receiving an input identifying a time at which the cue point starts using the graphical representation of the video content; and

receiving metadata associated with the cue point.

14. The computer implemented method of claim 12, wherein the metadata associated with the cue point comprises a tag associated with the cue point and a length of time associated with the cue point:

receiving data identifying a cue point within the video data where supplemental content is presented in place of the video data.

15. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein generating data for configuring the media player comprises:

receiving data restricting presentation of the video data to a geographic area.

16. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein generating data for configuring the media player comprises:

receiving data restricting presentation of the video data to an identified domain.

17. A system for managing video data comprising:

a content management system for receiving video data, receiving metadata associated with the video data, generating data for configuring a media player for receiving the video data and receiving video data and receiving a request to access the video data, the request including search terms;

a data store for storing the video data, the metadata associated with the video data and the data for configuring the media player, the data store also retrieving the video data by identifying stored metadata similar to search terms received from the content management system and transmitting the video data and the metadata associated with the video data to the content management system; and

a media player configuration module for generating the data for configuring the media player, wherein the data for configuring the media player is stored in the data store and transmitted to one or more destination sites coupled to the content management system.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the content management system includes:

an operations manager for identifying modifications to metadata associated with the video data received by the content management system and transmitting the modifications to the metadata to the data store for storage.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the data store comprises:

a video table for storing the video data and the metadata associated with the video data, the video table including an entry associated with the video data, the entry including an identifier associated with the video data, the video data and the metadata associated with the video data

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the entry further includes data associated with the video data and with a destination site that receives the video data.

21. The system of claim 17, wherein the video table further includes a log file describing changes to the metadata associated with the video data and identifying prior values of the metadata associated with the video data.

22. The system of claim 17, wherein the content management system includes:

a thumbnail editor for setting a first image from a plurality of images from the video data as a thumbnail image associated with the video data, communicating the first image to one or more destination sites and storing first analytical data from the one or more destination sites, the first analytical data describing interaction with the video data when the first image is set as the thumbnail image.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the thumbnail editor further sets a second image from the plurality of images as the thumbnail image associated with the video data, communicates the second image to the one or more destination sites and stores second analytical data from the one or more destination sites, the second analytical data describing interaction with the video data when the second image is set as the thumbnail image and determines the thumbnail image associated with the video data based on the first analytical data and the second analytical data.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the thumbnail editor determines the thumbnail image associated with the video data based on the first analytical data and the second analytical data by displaying the first analytical data and the second analytical data to a user and setting the thumbnail image associated with the video data responsive to a received input identifying the first frame or the second frame.

25. The system of claim 22, wherein the first analytical data includes a number of times the video data is accessed when the first image is set as the thumbnail image.

26. The system of claim 22, wherein the plurality of images comprises a plurality of frames from the video data.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the first image comprises a first frame from the video data, and the second image comprises a second frame from the video data.

28. The system of claim 17, wherein the content management system includes:

a cue point editor for receiving data identifying a cue point within the video data where supplemental content is presented in place of the video data.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein the cue point editor identifies a cue point within the video data by:

displaying a graphical representation of the video data including frames corresponding to different temporal locations within the video data;

receiving an input identifying a time at which the cue point starts using the graphical representation of the video content; and

receiving metadata associated with the cue point.

30. An apparatus comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium encoding instructions thereon that in response to execution by a computing device cause the computing device to perform operations comprising:

receiving video data;

receiving metadata associated with the video data;

generating data configuring a media player for presenting the video data;

storing the video data, the metadata associated with the video data and the data for configuring the media player in a data store;

associating the video data with one or more destination sites;

receiving a request to access the video data, the request including search terms;

identifying the video data by searching the data store for metadata similar to the search terms; and

presenting the video data and the metadata associated with the video data.

31. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the operations further comprise:

transmitting the video data, the metadata associated with the video data and the data for configuring the media player to one or more destination sites.

32. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving a modification to the metadata associated with the video data; and

storing the modification to the metadata associated with the video data in the data store.

33. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying a plurality of images;

setting a first image from the plurality of images as a thumbnail image associated with the video data;

communicating the first image to one or more destination sites;

receiving first analytical data describing interaction with the video data when the first image is set as the thumbnail image;

setting a second image from the plurality of images as the thumbnail image associated with the video data;

communicating the second image to the one or more destination sites;

receiving second analytical data describing interaction with the video data when the second image is set as the thumbnail image; and

determine the thumbnail image associated with the video data based on the first analytical data and the second analytical data.

34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein identifying the plurality of images comprises:

identifying a plurality of frames from the video data.

35. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein identifying the plurality of frames from the video data comprises:

receiving a first input selecting the first frame; and

receiving a second input selecting the second frame.
