Abstract

Devices, methods, and computer-readable media for determining that an end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network; obtaining an indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with a first cost; and, based on one or both of the indication that first wireless access network is associated with the first cost and the determination that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network, restricting communications associated with a first service activity over the first wireless access network.

Claims

1. An end-user device, comprising:

one or more modems for enabling the end-user device to communicate at least over a first wireless access network and over a second wireless access network;

one or more agents configured to;

determine that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network,

obtain an indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with a first cost, and

based on one or both of the indication that first wireless access network is associated with the first cost and the determination that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network, restrict communications associated with a first service activity over the first wireless access network.

2. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more agents comprises software.

3. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more agents comprises one or more of a policy implementation agent, an application interface agent, and a policy control agent.

4. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the first cost is greater than zero.

5. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the first cost is associated with a service plan.

The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the first cost comprises one or more of a cost per usage, a fixed cost, a cost for usage up to a limit, a cost for usage above a limit, a cost above a threshold, a cost for usage during a particular time period, a roaming cost, an overage cost, and a cost per usage over a threshold.

7. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the first wireless access network is a cellular network or a roaming network.

8. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the second wireless access network is associated with a second cost, the second cost being lower than the first cost.

9. The end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein at least one of the one or more agents is configured to allow the first service activity over the second wireless access network.

10. The end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the one or more agents are configured to restrict communications associated with the first service activity over the first wireless access network by preventing one or more of download, an upload, a background activity until the end-user device is connected to the second wireless access network.

11. The end-user device recited in claim 8, wherein the second cost is zero.

12. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the second wireless access network is a wireless fidelity (WiFi) network or a home network.

The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more agents are configured to restrict communications associated with the first service activity over the first wireless access network by one or more of blocking, preventing, throttling, shaping, compressing, and delaying the communications associated with the first service activity.

The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service activity comprises a background activity, and wherein at least one of the one or more agents is configured to restrict communications associated with the first service activity over the first wireless access network by blocking or preventing the background activity.

The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more agents comprise a first agent and a second agent, and wherein the first agent is configured to determine that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network, and wherein the second agent is configured to restrict communications associated with the first activity over the first wireless access network.

16. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more agents comprise a first agent and a second agent, and wherein the first agent is configured to determine that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network, and wherein the second agent is configured to obtain the indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with the first cost.

17. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more agents comprise a first agent and a second agent, and wherein the first agent is configured to obtain the indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with the first cost and to restrict communications associated with the first activity over the first wireless access network.

18. The end-user device recited in claim 1, further comprising a user interface, and wherein the one or more agents are further configured to obtain a user input through the user interface.

19. The end-user device recited in claim 18, wherein the user input comprises information about the first wireless access network.

20. The end-user device recited in claim 18, wherein the user input comprises information about the first cost.

21. The end-user device recited in claim 18, wherein the user input comprises the indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with the first cost.

22. The end-user device recited in claim 18, wherein the one or more agents are further configured to determine the restriction based on the user input.

23. The end-user device recited in claim 18, wherein the user input comprises a directive to block, throttle, delay or prevent the communications associated with the first service activity.

24. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more agents is configured to obtain the indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with the first cost using an application interface.

25. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more agents are configured to obtain the indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with the first cost at least in part by obtaining a user input.

26. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more agents are configured to obtain the indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with the first cost at least in part by obtaining information from a network element.

27. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the first service activity includes an attempted or successful data communication associated with a particular application on the end-user device.

28. The end-user device recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more agents are further configured to allow a second service activity over the first wireless access network.

29. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing program code for causing an end-user device to perform the steps of:

determining that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to a first wireless access network;

obtaining an indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with a first cost; and

based on one or both of the indication that first wireless access network is associated with the first cost and the determination that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network, restricting communications associated with a first service activity over the first wireless access network.

30. A method performed by an end-user device, the method comprising:

determining that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to a first wireless access network;

obtaining an indication that usage of the first wireless access network is associated with a first cost; and

based on one or both of the indication that first wireless access network is associated with the first cost and the determination that the end-user device is connected to or attempting to connect to the first wireless access network, restricting communications associated with a first service activity over the first wireless access network.
