Abstract

An exercise device for performing push ups and pull ups is disclosed. The device contains first and second tubes slidably engaged with a handle, which may be covered by a grip. A spring biases to the two tubes, drawing them inwardly together with respect to the handle. A first foot tube, including a first base, engages the second end of the first tube; a first button connector arranged to selectively lock the first foot tube with respect to the second end of the first tube. A second foot tube, including a second base, engages the second end of the second tube; and a second button connector selectively locks the second foot tube with respect to the second end of the second tube. The device may be engaged with a door frame to perform pull-ups.

Claims

1. An exercise device comprising:

a generally L-shaped first tube including a handle end and a support end;

a generally L-shaped second tube including a handle end and a support end;

a generally tubular handle configured to engage the handle end of the first tube and the handle end of the second tube; and

a spring arranged to bias at least one of the handle end of the first tube and the handle end of the second tube inwardly with respect to the handle.

2. The exercise device of claim 1 further comprising:

a first foot tube configured to engage the support end of the first tube;

a first button connector arranged to selectively lock the first foot tube with respect to the support end of the first tube;

a second foot tube configured to engage the support end of the second tube; and

a second button connector arranged to selectively lock the second foot tube with respect to the support end of the second tube.

3. The exercise device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first tube and the second tube is slidably engaged with the handle.

4. The exercise device of claim 1, wherein:

one of the first tube and the second tube is slidably engaged with the handle; and

the other one of the first tube and the second tube is rigidly engaged with the handle.

5. The exercise device of claim 2, wherein:

the first foot tube is slidably engaged with the second end of the first tube; and

the second foot tube is slidably engaged with the second end of the second tube.

6. The exercise device of claim 2, wherein:

the first foot tube includes a hole for engaging a button connector on the first L-shaped tube; and

the second foot tube includes a hole for engaging a button connector on the second L-shaped tube.

7. The exercise device of claim 6, wherein:

the handle is disposed at a first height when the hole on the first foot tube engages a first button connector on the first L-shaped tube, and the hole on the second foot tube engages a first button connector on the second L-shaped tube; and

the handle is disposed at a second height when the hole on the first foot tube engages a second button connector on the first L-shaped tube, and the hole on the second foot tube engages a second button connector on the second L-shaped tube.

8. The exercise device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first foot tube and the second foot tube includes a generally perpendicularly oriented base affixed thereto.

9. The exercise device of claim 8, further comprising a foot at least partially covering at least one of the first foot tube and its respective base, and the second foot tube and its respective base.

10. The exercise device of claim 8, further comprising a foot pad disposed on the base of at least one of the first foot tube and the second foot tube.

11. The exercise device of claim 1, further comprising a hand grip adapted to at least partially cover the handle.

12. The exercise device of claim 1, wherein the generally tubular handle contains one or more angles from the first end of the tube to the second end of the tube.

13. The exercise device of claim 8, wherein a pulling force of the handle in a perpendicular direction from the bases causes the first foot base and second foot base to compress together.

14. A method for converting from a push-up handle to a pull-up handle, including the steps of:

widening a separation between a first foot of an exercise device and a second foot of the exercise device, the first foot being associated with a first end of a first L-shaped tube, and the second foot being associated with a first end of a second L-shaped tube, a second end of the first L-shaped tube and a second end of the second L-shaped tube being slidably engaged by a generally tubular handle;

placing the first foot and the second foot adjacent a generally horizontal portion of a door frame associated with a wall; and

engaging at least one of the door frame and the wall with the exercise device by narrowing the separation between the first foot and the second foot.

15. The method of claim 14, where the step of widening the separation between the first foot and the second foot includes overcoming a force associated with a spring arranged to bias at least one of the first L-shaped tube and the second L-shaped tube inwardly with respect to the handle.

16. The method of claim 14, where the step of narrowing the separation between the first foot and the second foot includes allowing a force associated with a spring arranged to bias at least one of the first L-shaped tube and the second L-shaped tube inwardly with respect to the handle, to draw the first foot and the second foot towards each other.

17. The method of claim 14, further including:

increasing the narrowing force between the first foot and the second foot by applying a force on the handle in a direction away from the bases, and generally perpendicular to the compression force between the first foot and the second foot.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein increasing the narrowing force includes performing a pull-up with at least one exercise device.

19. An exercise apparatus adapted for performing push-ups and pull-ups, comprising:

a first height-adjustable base, and a second height-adjustable base, configured to engage with a first tube and a second tube;

the first tube and the second tube being slidably engaged together;

the first tube and the second tube forming at least one grip portion;

a spring within the at least one grip portion arranged to bias the first end of the first tube and the first end of the second tube.

20. The exercise apparatus of claim 19 further comprising:

a spring connecting the first base and the second base that increases the compression force between the first base and the second base when the grip section is pulled in a direction away from the bases.

21. The exercise apparatus of claim 19, wherein:

push-ups are performed with one or more exercise apparatus by placing the exercise apparatus on a surface, wherein each of the first and second bases oppose the same side of a surface, elevating each grip portion away from the surface; and

pull-ups are performed with one or more exercise apparatus by clamping the exercise apparatus on a wall above a door frame, wherein each of the first and second bases are on opposite sides of the wall, allowing each grip portion to straddle the door frame.
