Abstract

A system for preventing inadvertent actuation of a medical device. The system includes an elongate tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end. The lumen is configured to receive a medical device configured to transition between an actuated state and an inactive state. The device further includes a detection system configured to determine a position of a distal end of the medical device relative to the distal end of the elongate tube. The detection system includes a transmitting element and a receiving element.

Claims

1. A system for preventing inadvertent actuation of a medical device, the system comprising:

an elongate tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end, the lumen configured to receive a medical device configured to transition between an actuated state and an inactive state; and

a detection system configured to determine a position of a distal end of the medical device relative to the distal end of the elongate tube, wherein the detection system includes a transmitting element and a receiving element.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the transmitting element is an energy source and the receiving element is a corresponding sensor.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the transmitting element is disposed on a distal portion of the elongate tube, and the receiving element is disposed on a distal portion of the medical device.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the transmitting element and the receiving element are disposed on a wall of the lumen.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the elongate tube includes an endoscope having an illumination system.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein a portion of the illumination system is the transmitting element.

7. The system of claim 5, wherein the elongate tube is further configured to divert a portion of light energy from the illumination system to the receiving element.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein, when a distal end portion of the medical device protrudes from a lumen of the elongate tube, the detection system is configured to generate a signal indicative of the position of the medical device.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the signal further controls activation of the medical device.

10. A system for determining the position of a medical device, the system comprising:

an elongate tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween, wherein the lumen is defined by an internal wall of the elongate tube, the medical device is slidably positioned within the lumen, and the elongate tube includes an illumination element disposed between the internal wall and an external wall of the elongate tube;

a geometric feature disposed at a first location of the internal wall, wherein the geometric feature is configured to deflect a portion of light energy from the illumination element to a sensor disposed at a second location of the internal wall, wherein the second location is opposite the first location, wherein the medical device is configured to move between a first position and a second position, wherein, when in the first position, a distal end of the medical device is disposed proximally of the first and second locations, and, when in the second position, the distal end of the medical device is disposed distally of the first and second locations, and a portion of the medical device obstructs the light energy from the illumination element to the sensor.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the medical device is a laser.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the sensor is configured to generate a first signal when the sensor senses light from the illumination element.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the sensor is configured to generate a second signal when the sensor does not sense light from the illumination element.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein actuation of the medical device is prevented when the sensor is generating the first signal.

15. A method of determining a position of a laser medical device within a lumen of an endoscopic access device, the endoscopic access device including a light source, the method comprising:

sensing an intensity of light reflected from one of the light source and the laser medical device;

comparing the sensed intensity to a predetermined threshold intensity; and

if the sensed intensity is below the predetermined threshold intensity, generating a first signal indicative of a first position of the medical device.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein sensing the intensity of light includes sensing light reflected from the light source, and wherein the step of sensing is accomplished by a sensor located on the laser medical device.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein sensing the intensity of light includes sensing light reflected from the laser medical device, and wherein the step of sensing is accomplished by a sensor located on the access device.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the light reflected from the laser medical device includes light reflected from an aiming beam of the laser medical device.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein the method further includes the step of generating a second signal indicative of a second position of the medical device if the sensed intensity is above the predetermined threshold value.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the second position corresponds to a distal end of the laser medical device protruding from the lumen of the access sheath.
