Abstract

A computer program product for instant message communication in a wireless and non-wireless environment. A message is sent from a mobile unit device over a wireless communication network. The message includes a destination address, information associated with the mobile unit device'"'"'s user, message content and message address. If, according to information previously stored for the mobile unit device'"'"'s user at the instant message system, the destination address is associated with an instant message function, the associated instant message function is executed at the instant message system using the information contained in the message content, if required as determined by the associated instant message function. If, according to information previously stored for the mobile unit device'"'"'s user, the destination address is associated with an instant message name, an instant message is created according to the message content and is sent to the user with the associated instant message name.

7. A method comprising:

receiving a request to add a contact to a list of contacts associated with a user;

generating, using at least one processor, a set of executable instructions for a mobile device, that when executed by the mobile device, cause the mobile device to enter the contact in a contact list stored on the mobile device; and

sending the set of executable instructions to the mobile device.

8. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising receiving the request at a server.

9. The method as recited in claim 8, further comprising receiving the request via a website hosted by the server.

10. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein the list of contacts is maintained by the server.

11. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising receiving the request from the user.

12. The method as recited in claim 11, wherein the request comprises a request to create the list of contacts.

13. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising:

generating one or more executable instructions that, when executed by the mobile device, cause the mobile device to create the contact list on the mobile device; and

sending the one or more executable instructions to the mobile device with the set of executable instructions.

14. The method as recited in claim 7, wherein the contact list comprises an address book.

15. The method as recited in claim 7, wherein the contact list comprises an instant message contacts list.

16. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising sending information associated the contact to the mobile device with the set of executable instructions.

17. The method as recited in claim 16, wherein the information comprises a name and a phone number.

18. The method as recited in claim 7, wherein the mobile device comprises a phone.

19. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising sending the set of executable instructions to the mobile device via a wireless network.

20. The method as recited in claim 19, further comprising sending the set of executable instructions to the mobile device via a short message service center.

21. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising formatting the set of executable instructions based on a type of the mobile device.

22. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising determining a status of the contact on a communications system.

23. The method as recited in claim 22, further comprising sending the status of the contact on the communications system to the mobile device.

24. The method as recited in claim 23, wherein the status comprises an indication of whether the contact is logged into the communications system.

25. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including a set of instructions that, when executed, cause at least one processor to perform steps comprising:

receiving a request to add a contact to a list of contacts associated with a user;

generating a set of executable instructions for a mobile device, that when executed by the mobile device, cause the mobile device to enter the contact in a contact list stored on the mobile device; and

sending the set of executable instructions to the mobile device.

26. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to receive the request at a server.

27. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 26, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to receive the request via a website hosted by the server.

28. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 27, wherein the list of contacts is maintained by the server.

29. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to receive the request from the user.

30. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, wherein the request comprises a request to create the list of contacts.

31. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 30, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to:

generate one or more executable instructions that, when executed by the mobile device, cause the mobile device to create the contact list on the mobile device; and

send the one or more executable instructions to the mobile device with the set of executable instructions.

32. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, wherein the contact list comprises an address book.

33. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, wherein the contact list comprises an instant message contacts list.

34. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to send information associated the contact to the mobile device with the set of executable instructions.

35. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 34, wherein the information comprises a name and a phone number.

36. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, wherein the mobile device comprises a phone.

37. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to send the set of executable instructions to the mobile device via a wireless network.

38. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 37, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to send the set of executable instructions to the mobile device via a short message service center.

39. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to format the set of executable instructions based on a type of the mobile device.

40. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 25, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to determine a status of the contact on a communications system.

41. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 40, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to send the status of the contact on the communications system to the mobile device.

42. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 41, wherein the status comprises an indication of whether the contact is logged into the communications system.

43. A method comprising:

receiving at a mobile device a set of executable instructions that when executed by one or more processors of the mobile device, cause the mobile device to automatically enter one or more contacts in a contact list stored on the mobile device; and

executing the set of executable instructions using the one or more processors and entering the one or more contacts into the contact list;

wherein the one or more contacts are on a user-defined list associated with a user of the mobile device.

44. The method as recited in claim 43, further comprising receiving the set of executable instructions from a server.

45. The method as recited in claim 43, further comprising receiving one or more additional executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors of the mobile device, cause the mobile device to create the contact list.

46. The method as recited in claim 45, further comprising executing the one or more additional executable instructions and creating the contact list.

47. The method as recited in claim 43, wherein entering the one or more contacts into the contact list comprises entering the one or more contacts into an address book stored on the mobile device.

48. The method as recited in claim 43, wherein entering the one or more contacts into the contact list comprises entering the one or more contacts into an instant message contacts list.

49. The method as recited in claim 43, further comprising receiving information associated with the contact with the set of executable instructions.

50. The method as recited in claim 49, further comprising storing the additional information associated with the one or more contacts on the mobile device.

51. The method as recited in claim 51, wherein the additional information comprises a name and a phone number.

52. The method as recited in claim 51, further comprising receiving the set of executable instructions from a short message service center.

53. The method as recited in claim 51, further comprising receiving a status of the one or more contacts on a communications system.

54. The method as recited in claim 53, further comprising displaying the status of the one or more contacts on the communications system on a display device of the mobile device.

55. The method as recited in claim 54, wherein displaying the status of the one or more contacts on the communications system comprises displaying an indication next to usernames of the one or more contacts.

56. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including a set of instructions that, when executed, cause at least one processor of a mobile device to perform steps comprising:

extracting information regarding one or more contacts from the set of executable instructions; and

entering, automatically, the one or more contacts in a contact list stored on the mobile device;

wherein the one or more contacts are on a user-defined list associated with a user of the mobile device.

57. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 56, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to create the contact list on the mobile device.

58. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 56, wherein entering the one or more contacts into the contact list comprises entering the one or more contacts into an address book stored on the mobile device.

59. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 56, wherein entering the one or more contacts into the contact list comprises entering the one or more contacts into an instant message contacts list.

60. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 56, wherein the information comprises a name and a phone number.

61. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 56, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to receive a status of the one or more contacts on a communications system.

62. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 61, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to display the status of the one or more contacts on the communications system on a display device of the mobile device.

63. The method as recited in claim 62, wherein displaying the status of the one or more contacts on the communications system comprises displaying an indication next to usernames of the one or more contacts.

64. The method as recited in claim 63, further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to:

display a first indication next to a first username of a contact that is logged into the communications system; and

display a second indication next to a second username of a contact that is not logged into the communications system.
