Abstract

A method of deploying an ocular implant into Schlemm'"'"'s canal of a human eye including the following steps: inserting a distal tip of a delivery tool within an anterior chamber of the eye through trabecular meshwork of the eye into Schlemm'"'"'s canal of the eye; and advancing an ocular implant through a curved portion and a distal opening of the delivery tool to place a body portion of the ocular implant in Schlemm'"'"'s canal and an inlet portion of the ocular implant in the anterior chamber.

Claims

1. A method of deploying an ocular implant into Schlemm'"'"'s canal of a human eye comprising:

piercing trabecular meshwork and a wall of Schlemm'"'"'s canal with a distal tip of a delivery tool from within an anterior chamber of the eye;

inserting the distal tip of the delivery tool into Schlemm'"'"'s canal; and

operating an advancement mechanism from outside of the eye to advance an ocular implant through a curved portion and a distal opening of the delivery tool and to place a body portion of the ocular implant in Schlemm'"'"'s canal and an inlet portion of the ocular implant in the anterior chamber.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the delivery tool comprises a curved distal portion, the inserting step comprising aligning the curved distal portion with respect to Schlemm'"'"'s canal so that the ocular implant is delivered into the center of Schlemm'"'"'s canal or slightly radially inward of an outer wall of Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the curved distal portion of the delivery tool has a radius of curvature smaller than a radius of curvature of Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the inserting step comprises advancing the distal tip into Schlemm'"'"'s canal until a stop portion of a distal opening surface surrounding the distal opening engages the trabecular meshwork.

The method of claim 1 wherein the inserting step comprises depressing trabecular meshwork and Schlemm'"'"'s canal tissue with a distal opening surface bordering the distal opening, the distal opening surface being disposed at an angle other than 90 degrees with respect to a longitudinal axis of the delivery tool.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the delivery tool comprises a distal opening surface bordering the distal opening, the inserting step comprising inserting less than all of the distal opening surface into Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the inserting step comprises depressing trabecular meshwork and Schlemm'"'"'s canal tissue with the distal opening surface.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the delivery tool forms a ramp to guide insertion of the ocular implant into Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the delivery tool comprises a distal opening surface bordering the distal opening and a tongue region extending proximally from the distal tip on one side of the delivery tool, the tongue region forming at least part of the distal opening surface such that the distal opening surface is more distal on the one side than on a side of the tubular member opposite to the one side, the inserting step comprising inserting the tongue region into Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the advancing step comprises advancing the ocular implant through the distal opening while the tongue region is disposed in Schlemm'"'"'s canal and a portion of the distal opening surface is disposed outside of Schlemm'"'"'s canal.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the tongue region is a first tongue region, the delivery tool further comprising a second tongue region and a stop member defining the distal opening surface, the operating step comprising operating the advancement mechanism to advance the ocular implant through the distal opening of the delivery tool after the stop member engages trabecular meshwork and when the first tongue region is in Schlemm'"'"'s canal and the second tongue region is in the anterior chamber.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the curved portion of the delivery tool defines a curvature plane, the distal opening forming an angle other than 90 degrees with respect to the curvature plane.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the inserting step comprises inserting the distal tip into Schlemm'"'"'s canal tangentially.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the curved portion of the delivery tool defines a curvature plane and the ocular implant is adapted to bend preferentially in a preferential bending plane, the operating step comprising operating the advancement mechanism to advance the ocular implant through the curved portion with the ocular implant bending plane being co-planar with the curved portion curvature plane.
