Abstract

A handheld computing device includes a screen to receive input from and provide graphical output to a user, a housing engaging a peripheral portion of the screen, a light source, at least one light guide to receive incident light from the light source and direct the incident light to the screen to illuminate a portion of the screen, and a light guide bracket to engage the housing and the at least one light guide, the light guide bracket maintaining a position and orientation of the light guide relative to the light source.

Claims

1. A handheld computing device, comprising:

a screen to receive input from and provide graphical output to a user;

a housing engaging a peripheral portion of the screen;

a light source;

at least one light guide to receive incident light from the light source and direct the incident light to the screen to illuminate a portion of the screen; and

a light guide bracket to engage the housing and the at least one light guide, the light guide bracket maintaining a position and orientation of the light guide relative to the light source.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the screen comprises a display panel, the display panel comprising plural imaging pixels to render a selected image, and wherein the screen portion illuminated by the light guide is free of pixels.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the light guide is substantially transmissive to light and the light guide bracket is substantially opaque to light.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein a light receiving surface of the at least one light guide is concave to refract the incident light along an optical axis of the light guide and wherein a light emitting surface of the at least one light guide is substantially flat to engage a substantially planar surface of the screen.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the light receiving surface, in cross section, is defined by a parabola.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one light guide is melt bonded to the light guide bracket.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one light guide and light guide bracket form an integral structure.

8. A light guide bracket, comprising:

a plurality of optically transmissive light guides configured to receive light from a light source and direct the light to a selected location on a screen of a handheld device; and

an optically opaque light guide bracket to engage a housing of the handheld device and the plurality of light guides, the light guide bracket maintaining a position and orientation of the light guide relative to the light source, wherein the plurality of light guides are melt bonded to the light guide bracket.

9. The bracket of claim 8, wherein a light receiving surface of each of the plurality of light guides is concave to refract the incident light along an optical axis of the light guide and wherein a light emitting surface of the at least one light guide is substantially flat to engage a substantially planar surface of the screen.

10. The bracket of claim 9, wherein the light receiving surface, in cross section, is defined by a parabola.

11. A method, comprising:

introducing a first resin into a mold;

substantially solidifying the first resin to form a light guide bracket, the light guide bracket comprising plural light guide receptacles; and

thereafter introducing a second resin into the light guide receptacles; and

solidifying the second resin to form light guides in the receptacles of the light guide bracket.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the first resin is optically opaque and the second resin is optically transmissive.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the first and second resins are introduced into a common mold.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein a light receiving surface of each of the guides is concave to refract the incident light along an optical axis of the corresponding light guide and wherein a light emitting surface of the corresponding light guide is substantially flat to engage a substantially planar surface of a screen of a handheld device.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the light receiving surface, in cross section, is defined by a parabola.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the light guides are melt bonded to the light guide bracket.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the light guides and light guide bracket form an integral structure.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the first and second resin have different melting and/or softening points.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the first and second resins have differing chemical compositions.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein the first resin comprises at least one of optical blockers, optical absorbers and optical diffusers.
