Abstract

An instrument system that includes an elongate body in a geometric configuration, an optical fiber, and a controller is provided. The optical fiber is operatively coupled to the elongate body and has a strain sensor provided on the optical fiber, wherein at least a portion of the optical fiber is in the geometric configuration. The controller is operatively coupled to the optical fiber and adapted to receive, from a source other than the optical fiber, information indicative of the geometric configuration, receive a signal from the strain sensor, and associate the signal with the geometric configuration.

Claims

1. An instrument system, comprising:

an elongate body in a geometric configuration;

an optical fiber operatively coupled to the elongate body and having a strain sensor provided on the optical fiber, wherein at least a portion of the optical fiber is in the geometric configuration; and

a controller operatively coupled to the optical fiber and adapted to;

receive, from a source other than the optical fiber, information indicative of the geometric configuration;

receive a signal from the strain sensor; and

associate the signal with the geometric configuration.

2. The instrument system of claim 1, wherein the geometric configuration of the elongate body is a bent shape, and wherein the controller is adapted to associate the signal with the geometric configuration by associating the signal with the bent shape.

3. The instrument system of claim 1, further comprising a fixture having a passage in which. the elongate body is located, wherein the geometric configuration of the elongate body is formed from a shape of the passage.

4. The instrument system of claim 3, wherein the shape of the passage forms a straight line.

5. The instrument system of claim 3, wherein the shape of the passage forms a quarter circle or forms a bend of 90 degrees.

The instrument system of claim 1, wherein the controller is adapted to receive information indicative of a diameter of the optical fiber, a position of the optical fiber relative to the elongate body, a position of the strain sensor relative to the optical fiber, reflectivity of the strain sensor, a thermal property of the optical fiber, or a mechanical property of the optical fiber, and wherein the controller is adapted to associate the information with the signal.

7. A method for calibration, comprising:

receiving a signal from a strain sensor provided on an optical fiber operatively coupled to an elongate body;

receiving, from a source other than the optical fiber, information indicative of a geometric configuration of an elongate body, wherein at least a portion of the optical fiber is in the geometric configuration; and

associating the signal with the geometric configuration

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the geometric configuration of the elongate body is a bent shape, and wherein associating the signal with the geometric configuration comprises associating the signal with the bent shape.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the geometric configuration of the elongate body is formed from a shape of a passage of a fixture, wherein receiving the signal from the strain sensor provided on the optical fiber comprises receiving a signal from an optical fiber located in the passage.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the shape of the passage forms a straight line.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the shape of the passage forms a quarter circle or forms a bend of 90 degrees.

12. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

receiving information indicative of a diameter of the optical fiber, a position of the optical fiber relative to the elongate body, a position of the strain sensor relative to the optical fiber, reflectivity of the strain sensor, a thermal property of the optical fiber, or a mechanical property of the optical fiber; and

associating the information with the signal.

13. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

comparing the signal with the geometric configuration; and

storing data representative of the comparison on a storage medium associated with the elongate body.

14. A method of performing a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure using an elongate body calibrated according to claim 13, the method comprising:

maneuvering the elongate body within a patient'"'"'s body,

determining one or more sensed position and/or orientation variables of the elongate body based on signals received from the strain sensor while the elongate body is in the patient'"'"'s body, and

adjusting the sensed position and/or orientation variables based on the stored comparison data.
