Abstract

An instrument system that includes an optical fiber and a controller is provided. The optical fiber is coupled to an external structure of a patient and has a strain sensor provided thereon. The controller is operatively coupled to the optical fiber and adapted to receive a signal from the strain sensor and to determine a property of respiration of the patient based on the signal.

Claims

1. An instrument system, comprising:

an optical fiber coupled to an external structure of a patient and having a strain sensor provided thereon;

a controller operatively coupled to the optical fiber and adapted to;

receive a signal from the strain sensor; and

determine a property of respiration of the patient based on the signal.

2. The instrument system of claim 1, wherein the external structure comprises the patient'"'"'s chest, and wherein the property of respiration comprises movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

3. The instrument system of claim 2, further comprising an elongate body adapted to be located inside the patient, wherein the controller is adapted to control the elongate body based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

4. The instrument system of claim 3, wherein the elongate body is adapted to deliver therapy inside the patient, and wherein the controller is configured to control timing of the delivery of therapy based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

5. The instrument system of claim 4, wherein the elongate body comprises an ablation catheter, and wherein the controller is adapted to control timing of the delivery of therapy by causing the ablation catheter to deliver ablation energy at a plurality of times that each correspond to a same point of a respiratory cycle or of a cardiac cycle.

6. The instrument system of claim 3, further comprising an actuation element adapted to actuate the elongate body, wherein the controller is adapted to control the actuation element based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

7. The instrument system of claim 3, wherein the controller is adapted to adjust a model of an internal structure of the patient based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

8. A method for monitoring respiration, comprising:

receiving a signal from a strain sensor provided on an optical fiber, wherein the optical fiber is coupled to an exterior of the patient; and

determining a property of respiration of the patient based on the signal.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the external structure comprises the patient'"'"'s chest, and wherein determining the property of respiration comprises determining movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising controlling an elongate body that is adapted to be placed inside the patient based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the elongate body is adapted to deliver therapy inside the patient, the method further comprising controlling timing of the delivery of therapy based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the elongate body comprises an ablation catheter, and wherein the controlling the timing of the delivery of therapy comprises causing the ablation catheter to deliver ablation energy at a plurality of times that each correspond to a same point of a respiratory cycle or of a cardiac cycle.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the controller is adapted to control an actuation element that is adapted to actuate the elongate body, the control based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising adjusting a model of an internal structure of the patient based on the determined movement of the patient'"'"'s chest.

15. A medical system, comprising:

one or more optical fibers configured to be coupled to a patient'"'"'s body and/or a structure used to stabilize the patient'"'"'s body; and

a controller configured to determine one or more position and/or orientation variables of the patient'"'"'s body based on signals received from the one or more optical fibers.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the controller is configured to generate an output for a system operator upon detection of an unexpected patient movement based on signals received from the one or more optical fibers.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the controller causes a displayed image of the patient'"'"'s body to move in response to detected movement of the patient'"'"'s body based on signals received from the the one or more optical fibers.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein at least one of the one or more optical fibers is coupled to a patient patch having an adhesive surface for attachment to the patient'"'"'s body.

19. The system of claim 15, further comprising a radio-opaque marker coupled to the one of the one or more optical fibers.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the controller is configured to determine location of the radio-opaque marker in a coordinate system of a fluoroscopic imaging system, determine a location of the radio-opaque marker in a coordinate system of the respective optical fibers, and register the respective coordinate systems with each other based in part upon the respective location of the marker.
