Abstract

Methods and systems may be provided for installing a route entry associated with multicast traffic to a memory. Client devices may be notified of the route entry for advertisement by an active source device. The delivery group and delivery source may be retrieved from the information for the route entry. Multicast data trees may maintain delivery group and delivery source information for access.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

installing (VLAN, *, *) route information into a first routing information database with a null oiflist;

storing the (VLAN, *, *) route information with a punt flag to a distribution memory;

notifying IS-IS of the route information;

distributing the route information from IS-IS to a plurality of remote sites;

sending a first multicast data packet from a first source addressed to devices interested in a first group; and

if the first multicast data packet hits the (VLAN, *, *) route entry, punting the multicast data packet to a first processor.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising informing an OTV about received (VLAN, first source, first group) route information;

appending delivery information for (VLAN, first source, first group) to the route information; and

storing the appended route information to the first routing information database.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising notifying IS-IS about the discovered first source;

updating a second routing information database about the discovered first source; and

performing a lookup to obtain sites local interest for the first group.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising determining if any obtained sites have IGMP oifs;

sending a second multicast packet from a second source addresses to devices interested in the first group;

discovering a router port at the first source; and

snooping router port updates to discover a new oiflist.

5. The method of claim 4, comprising storing the appended route information to the distribution memory.

6. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

if the new oiflist is not null, notifying an OTV and IS-IS about the appended route information; and

sending IGMP join message into for sites with interest in the first group.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

storing the appended route information to a multicast routing information database.

8. A method comprising:

installing a drop and punt route to cover a multicast range;

learning (VLAN, S, G) route information from a punted multicast packet; and

installing learned (VLAN, S, G) route information on a forwarding engine.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

installing the drop and punt route on the forwarding engine.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

punting a first multicast packet hitting the drop and punt route.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

receiving a second multicast data packet at an edge device, wherein the second multicast data packet hits the drop and punt route;

copying the second multicast data packet to memory associate with the edge device.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

processing the copied multicast data packet with a control plane component.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

sending the (VLAN, S, G) route information from the copied multicast data packet to the forwarding engine;

dropping the copied multicast data packet if no remote interested receivers exist; and

sending the copied multicast data packet if remote interested receivers exist.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

distributing the (VLAN, S, G) route information, using OTV to the remote interested receivers.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

tracking the liveness of (VLAN, S, G) streams by periodically learning the incoming traffic rate.

16. A network device comprising:

a memory;

a processor programmed to;

install a route entry associated with multicast traffic to the memory;

notify client devices of the route entry for advertisement by an active source device;

retrieve delivery group and delivery source information for the route entry; and

maintain the memory of delivery group and delivery source information in multicast data trees.

17. The network device of claim 16 wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine interested local receivers by referring to a routing information database; and

handle join requests to the multicast data trees.

18. The network device of claim 16, wherein the network device is a network OTV edge device.

19. The network device of claim 17, wherein the processor is further programmed to:

advertise the route via IS-IS.

20. The network device of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to snoop via IGMP.
