Abstract

An application that enables users to effectively utilize and manage knowledge and data the user posses and allows other users to effectively and seamlessly benefit from the user'"'"'s knowledge and data over a computer network is also disclosed. A method of processing content created by a user utilizing a semantic, ontology-driven portal on a computer network is described. The semantic portal application provides the user with a content base, such as a semantic form or meta-form, for creating a semantic posting. The semantic portal utilizes a knowledge data structure, such as a taxonomy or ontology, in preparing a semantic posting based on the information provided by the user via the content base. The semantic portal application prepares a preview of a semantic posting for evaluation by the user. The semantic posting is then either modified by the user or accepted and posted by the user for external parties to view.

Claims

1. A method of managing a set of interrelated knowledge objects, the method comprising:

creating a knowledge object of a particular object type in a web space responsive to receiving a request from a user;

wherein the particular object type is associated with a predetermined semantic structure suitable to represent the knowledge object;

presenting a form specific to the particular object type having a plurality of predetermined fields to the user in conjunction with creating the knowledge object, wherein, content of at least one of the plurality of predetermined fields is user specifiable;

analyzing the knowledge object to identify metadata associated with the knowledge object; and

creating a semantic link between the knowledge object with another knowledge object of the set of interrelated knowledge objects, based on the identified metadata.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising, tracking a set of rules governing permission to access the set of interrelated knowledge objects.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein, the set of rules are specifiable by an administrative user of the set of interrelated knowledge objects.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein, the user is one or more of, the administrative user, or another using having access rights in the web space.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein, the form is user-modifiable to add or remove a field to the plurality of predetermined fields.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein, the knowledge object is associated with a knowledge database.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein, the knowledge database is an ontology or taxonomy.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein, the particular type is one or more of, a person, a project, a document, a question, and a topic.

9. A method, comprising:

receiving a request to create a customized web-space from an administrator;

identifying user preferences specified by the administrator comprising permissions governing access rights by a visitor of the customized web-space;

wherein the visitor is exclusive of the administrator;

enforcing the governing access rights of the customized web-space by the visitor;

receiving a request from the administrator to add content to the personalized web-space;

analyzing the content; and

associating the content with a knowledge data structure.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising, providing a template of a particular semantic structure based on an identified type of the content to be added.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein, the template is user-specifiable or user-modifiable by selecting to show, hide, add, delete, and/or reordering slots.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein,a particular semantic structure is associated with a content type for representing, a person, a project, a document, a question, or a topic.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising, granting default access and edit permissions of a web-object in the personalized web-space to the administrator.

14. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

receiving an access request from the visitor to interact with the customized web-space;

wherein the access request comprises one or more of a request for, viewing, writing, or editing one or more of the plurality of knowledge objects in the web-portal;

determining the permissions governing access or edit rights possessed by the visitor; and

in response to determining that the guest user possesses the permissions to satisfy the access request received from the visitor, enabling the visitor to interact with the web-portal;

wherein visibility or editability of the content to the visitor is determined by at least one privacy setting in the user preferences.

15. The method of claim 9, further comprising, managing a subscription to the personalized web-space for a subscriber user based on a set of rules.

16. The method of claim 9, further comprising, managing a subscription to the content for the subscriber user based on the set of rules.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein, the visitor interacts with the personalized web-space via one or more of a web browser, an email client, and an RSS client.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein, the visitor interacts with the customized web-space via one or more of a XML-RPC and SOAP client.

19. The method of claim 9, wherein, the customized web-space is semantic-search enabled.

20. A system for managing a set of interrelated knowledge objects, the system comprising:

means for, creating a knowledge object of a particular object type in a web space responsive to receiving a request from a user;

wherein the particular object type is associated with a predetermined semantic structure suitable to represent the knowledge object;

means for, presenting a form specific to the particular object type having a plurality of predetermined fields to the user in conjunction with creating the knowledge object, wherein, content of at least one of the plurality of predetermined fields is user specifiable;

means for, analyzing the knowledge object to identify metadata associated with the knowledge object; and

means for, creating a semantic link between the knowledge object with another knowledge object of the set of interrelated knowledge objects, based on the identified metadata.
