Abstract

An electronic message may be reconfigured to effect an enhanced notification using an input interface to receive at least one electronic message created by or on behalf of a message source for delivery to an intended recipient. A matching engine determines whether the electronic message corresponds to a predetermined definition of an enhanced notification. An enhancement engine reconfigures the electronic message to the enhanced notification if stored information related to the intended recipient indicates that the intended recipient is subscribed to receive the enhanced notification. Reconfiguring the electronic message may include reconfiguring the message to provide special handling, routing or presentation.

21. A method comprising:

identifying an intended recipient of an electronic message;

determining, using at least one processor, presence information associated with the intended recipient;

selecting, based on the presence information associated with the intended recipient, one or more delivery mechanisms of a plurality of delivery mechanisms for delivering the electronic message; and

sending the electronic message to the intended recipient via the one or more selected delivery mechanisms.

22. The method as recited in claim 21, wherein the presence information comprises at least one of an online presence, a presence on a mobile device, or a physical presence.

23. The method as recited in claim 22, further comprising sending the electronic message via a first delivery mechanism if the intended recipient has an online presence.

24. The method as recited in claim 23, wherein the online presence is an active instant message session.

25. The method as recited in claim 24, wherein the first delivery mechanism is an instant message.

26. The method as recited in claim 23, wherein the online presence indicates current website browsing.

27. The method as recited in claim 26, wherein the first delivery mechanism is a pop-up window.

28. The method as recited in claim 23, wherein the online presence indicates online activity via a television.

29. The method as recited in claim 28, wherein the first delivery mechanism is a pop-up window.

30. The method as recited in claim 22, further comprising sending the electronic message via a second delivery mechanism if the intended recipient has a presence on the mobile device.

31. The method as recited in claim 30, wherein the mobile device is a wireless phone.

32. The method as recited in claim 30, wherein the mobile device is a personal digital assistant.

33. The method as recited in claim 30, wherein the second delivery mechanism is a text message.

34. The method as recited in claim 30, further comprising reconfiguring the electronic message as a notification and sending the notification to the mobile device.

35. The method as recited in claim 34, wherein the notification contains only a portion of the electronic message.

36. The method as recited in claim 34, wherein the notification is an icon.

37. The method as recited in claim 30, further comprising sending the sending the electronic message concurrently via the first and second delivery mechanisms.

38. The method as recited in claim 22, further comprising sending the electronic message via a third delivery mechanism if the intended recipient has a geographic position within a predefined range.

39. A system comprising:

at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more definitions; and

at least one processor programmed to;

identify an intended recipient of an electronic message;

determine presence information associated with the intended recipient;

select, based on the presence information and the one or more definitions, one or more delivery mechanisms of a plurality of delivery mechanisms for delivering the electronic message; and

send the electronic message to the intended recipient via the one or more selected delivery mechanisms.

40. The system as recited in claim 39, wherein the presence information comprises at least one of an online presence, a presence on a mobile device, or a physical presence.

41. The system as recited in claim 40, wherein the one or more definitions indicate which delivery mechanisms of the plurality of delivery mechanisms are to be used to send the electronic message to the intended recipient based on the determined presence information.

42. The system as recited in claim 41, wherein the one or more definitions are preferences set by the intended recipient.

43. The system as recited in claim 41, wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to send the electronic message via a first delivery mechanism if the intended recipient has an online presence.

44. The system as recited in claim 43, wherein the first delivery mechanism is a pop-up window.

45. The system as recited in claim 43, wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to send the electronic message via a second delivery mechanism if the intended recipient has a presence on the mobile device.

46. The system as recited in claim 45, wherein the mobile device is a wireless phone.

47. The system as recited in claim 45, wherein the mobile device is a tablet computer.

48. The system as recited in claim 45, wherein the second delivery mechanism is a text message.

49. The system as recited in claim 45, wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to send the electronic message via a second delivery mechanism irrespective of whether the intended recipient views the electronic message sent via the first delivery mechanism.

50. The system as recited in claim 49, further comprising reconfiguring the electronic message as a notification and sending the notification to the mobile device.

51. The system as recited in claim 50, wherein the notification contains only a portion of the electronic message.

52. The system as recited in claim 51, wherein the notification is an icon.

53. The system as recited in claim 51, wherein the notification is a pop-up notification.

54. A method comprising:

identifying an intended recipient of an electronic notification;

determining, using at least one processor, presence information associated with the intended recipient;

determining a definition from a plurality of definitions corresponding to the determined presence information;

sending the electronic notification to the intended recipient via one or more delivery mechanisms indicated by the determined definition.

55. The method as recited in claim 54, wherein plurality of definitions are preferences set by the intended recipient.

56. The method as recited in claim 54, wherein the plurality of definitions are default system definitions.

57. The method as recited in claim 54, wherein the presence information comprises an indication that the intended recipient is currently logged into a communications system.

58. The method as recited in claim 57, further comprising sending the electronic notification to the intended recipient via the communications system.

59. The method as recited in claim 58, further comprising sending the electronic notification as a pop-up window.

60. The method as recited in claim 58, further comprising sending the electronic notification as an icon.

61. The method as recited in claim 58, wherein:

the communications system comprises an instant message system; and

the one or more delivery mechanisms comprise an instant message.

62. The method as recited in claim 54, wherein the presence information comprises an indication that the intended recipient is currently active on a mobile device.

63. The method as recited in claim 62, wherein the mobile device is a wireless phone.

64. The system as recited in claim 62, wherein the mobile device is a tablet computer.

65. The system as recited in claim 62, further comprising sending the electronic notification via a first delivery mechanism and a second delivery mechanism.

66. The system as recited in claim 65, wherein the first delivery mechanism is an icon.

67. The system as recited in claim 66, wherein the second delivery mechanism is a pop-up notification.

68. The system as recited in claim 66, wherein the second delivery mechanism is an audible alert.

69. The method as recited in claim 54, wherein the presence information comprises an indication that the intended recipient is currently logged into a software program.

70. The method as recited in claim 69, further comprising sending the electronic notification to the intended recipient via the software program.

71. The method as recited in claim 70, wherein the software program comprises one of a task program or a calendar program.

72. The method as recited in claim 70, further comprising sending the electronic notification as a pop-up window.

73. The method as recited in claim 70, further comprising sending the electronic notification as an icon.
