- a plurality of contact elements, each of the plurality of contact elements configured for attachment to an external skin surface of a pregnant female; and
a plurality of electrodes associated with each of the plurality of contact elements such that the plurality of electrodes contact the external skin surface of the pregnant female when the contact element is attached, each of the plurality of contact elements having its plurality of electrodes configured in a unique pattern, fetal electrical activity being detected by the electrodes when the contact elements are attached.
