Abstract

A visual representation of a set of instantiated virtualized resources may be displayed and include a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of a set of instantiated virtualized resources. In addition, a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources may be monitored, and the display may be caused to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources.

Claims

1. A computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to:

access data identifying a set of virtualized resources instantiated in a computing environment;

cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources;

monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources; and

based on monitoring the performance-related metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources, cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a linear row of equally-sized rectangles each of which represents an individual one of the set of instantiated resources.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 2 wherein the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to plot the values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources as bars of a histogram overlaying the linear row of rectangles representing individual ones of the set of instantiated resources such that the bar of the histogram overlaying any rectangle of the linear row represents the value of the metric for the individual instantiated resource represented by the rectangle it is overlaying.

4. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 2 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a linear row of equally-sized rectangles each of which represents an individual one of the set of instantiated resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device of the linear row of equally-sized rectangles to be a horizontal row of rectangles arranged such that lengths of the rectangles are perpendicular to the linear row and widths of the rectangles are parallel to the linear row; and

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to plot the values for the metric for the individual instantiated resources as bars of a histogram positioned above the horizontal, linear row of rectangles representing individual ones of the set of instantiated resources such that one bar of the histogram is positioned above any rectangle of the linear row and the bar of the histogram positioned above any rectangle of the linear row represents the value of the metric for the individual instantiated resource represented by the rectangle it is positioned above.

5. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 2 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a linear row of equally-sized rectangles each of which represents an individual one of the set of instantiated resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device of the linear row of equally-sized rectangles to be a horizontal row of rectangles arranged such that lengths of the rectangles are perpendicular to the linear row and widths of the rectangles are parallel to the linear row; and

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to plot the values for the metric for the individual instantiated resources as bars of a histogram positioned below the horizontal, linear row of rectangles representing individual ones of the set of instantiated resources such that one bar of the histogram is positioned below any rectangle of the linear row and the bar of the histogram positioned below any rectangle of the linear row represents the value of the metric for the individual instantiated resource represented by the rectangle it is positioned below.

6. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 2 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by the computer system, cause the computer system to monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computer system cause the computer system to monitor both a first performance-related metric and a second performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a linear row of equally-sized rectangles each of which represents an individual one of the set of instantiated resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device of the linear row of equally-sized rectangles to be a horizontal row of rectangles arranged such that lengths of the rectangles are perpendicular to the linear row and widths of the rectangles are parallel to the linear row; and

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for both the first metric and the second metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources by;

plotting the values for the first metric for the individual instantiated resources as bars of a first histogram positioned above the horizontal, linear row of rectangles representing individual ones of the set of instantiated resources such that one bar of the first histogram is positioned above any rectangle of the linear row and the bar of the first histogram positioned above any rectangle of the linear row represents the value of the first metric for the individual instantiated resource represented by the rectangle it is positioned above, and

plotting the values for the second metric for the individual instantiated resources as bars of a second histogram positioned below the horizontal, linear row of rectangles representing individual ones of the set of instantiated resources such that one bar of the second histogram is positioned below any rectangle of the linear row and the bar of the second histogram positioned below any rectangle of the linear row represents the value of the second metric for the individual instantiated resource represented by the rectangle it is positioned below.

7. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtualized resources instantiated in a computing environment include instructions that, when executed by the computing system cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtual machines instantiated in a computing environment;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtual machines that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of virtual machines;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor CPU usage by individual ones of the instantiated virtual machines; and

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect CPU usage values for the individual instantiated virtual machines in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtual machines.

8. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtualized resources instantiated in a computing environment include instructions that, when executed by the computing system cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtual machines instantiated in a computing environment;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtual machines that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of virtual machines;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor memory usage by individual ones of the instantiated virtual machines; and

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect memory usage values for the individual instantiated virtual machines in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtual machines.

9. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtualized resources instantiated in a computing environment include instructions that, when executed by the computing system cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtualized storage resources instantiated in a computing environment;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized storage resources that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of virtualized storage resources;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor free space remaining for individual ones of the instantiated virtualized storage resources; and

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect free space remaining values for the individual instantiated virtualized storage resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized storage resources.

10. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtualized resources instantiated in a computing environment include instructions that, when executed by the computing system cause the computing system to access data identifying a set of virtual networks instantiated in a computing environment;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtual networks that includes a linear row of graphical representations of individual ones of the set of virtual networks;

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to monitor throughput on individual ones of the instantiated virtual networks; and

the instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by the computing system, cause the computing system to cause the display on the display device to reflect throughput values for the individual instantiated virtual networks in connection with the corresponding graphical representations of the individual instantiated virtual networks.

11. A computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

access data identifying a set of virtualized resources instantiated in a computing environment;

cause a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a horizontal, linear row of rectangular representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources;

monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources; and

based on monitoring the performance-related metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources, cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding rectangular representations of the individual instantiated virtualized resources.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 wherein:

the instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to cause the display on the display device to reflect values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources in connection with the corresponding rectangular representations of the individual instantiated resources include instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to cause the display on the display device to plot the values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources as bars of a histogram overlaying the linear row of rectangular representations of the individual instantiated resources such that the bar of the histogram overlaying any rectangle of the linear row represents the value of the metric for the individual instantiated resource represented by the rectangle it is overlaying.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 wherein the instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to cause a display of a horizontal, linear row of rectangular representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to cause a display of a horizontal, linear row of equally-sized rectangular representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to cause a display of a horizontal, linear row of equally-sized rectangular representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources include instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to cause the display of the horizontal, linear row of equally-sized rectangular representations to be arranged such that lengths of the rectangular representations are perpendicular to the horizontal, linear row and widths of the rectangular representations are parallel to the horizontal, linear row.

15. A computer-implemented method comprising:

accessing data identifying a set of virtualized resources instantiated in a computing environment;

causing a display on a display device of a visual representation of the set of instantiated virtualized resources that includes a horizontal, linear row of equally-sized rectangular representations of individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources;

monitor a performance-related metric for individual ones of the set of instantiated virtualized resources; and

based on monitoring the performance-related metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources, cause the display on the display device to plot values for the metric for the individual instantiated virtualized resources as bars of a histogram overlaying the horizontal, linear row of rectangular representations of the individual instantiated resources such that the bar of the histogram overlaying any rectangle of the linear row represents the value of the metric for the individual instantiated resource represented by the rectangle it is overlaying.
