Abstract

A variety of polymeric synthetic hernia mesh prosthesis with surface treatment on at least one tissue-facing surface to control tissue adhesion are disclosed including heparin surface treatment which provides heparin present in an amount to yield heparin bioactivity of at least one of i) an ATIII binding of at least 2 pmol/cm², and ii) a thrombin deactivation of at least 0.2 IU/cm²; an acrylic surface treatment for coupling thereto of a heparin surface treatment, a collagen surface treatment or both; and an amino-functional polysiloxane surface treatment for coupling thereto of a heparin surface treatment. The synthetic hernia mesh may be formed of monofilament or multifilament polypropylene or polyester, and may be formed as a multi-layer prosthesis with an outer layer formed of a polymeric synthetic hernia mesh with surface treatment to control tissue adhesion coupled to one or more polymeric synthetic hernia meshes without such surface treatments.

Claims

1. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis including heparin surface treatment on at least one tissue-facing surface wherein the heparin surface treatment provides heparin present in an amount to provide bioactivity of the heparin of at least one of i) an AT-III binding of at least 2 pmol/cm², and ii) a thrombin deactivation of at least 0.2 IU/cm².

2. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein the heparin surface treatment provides heparin present in an amount to provide bioactivity of the heparin of an AT-III binding of at least 4 pmol/cm².

3. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein the heparin surface treatment provides heparin present in an amount to provide bioactivity of the heparin of a thrombin deactivation of at least 0.4 IU/cm².

9. A polymeric synthetic surgical prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes a plurality of polyester mesh layers wherein only one polyester mesh layer includes the heparin treatment.

14. A polymeric synthetic surgical prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes at least one polypropylene mesh layer having an siloxane surface treatment between the heparin treatment and the polypropylene mesh layer.

A polymeric synthetic surgical prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes at least one polypropylene mesh layer having an acrylic surface treatment and a collagen surface treatment coupled to the acrylic surface treatment and the heparin treatment coupled to the collagen treatment.

17. A polymeric synthetic surgical prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes at least one polypropylene mesh layer having an acrylic surface treatment and the heparin treatment coupled to the acrylic treatment.

21. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis with surface treatment on at least one tissue-facing surface to control tissue adhesion including an acrylic surface treatment for coupling thereto of one of i) a heparin surface treatment, ii) a collagen surface treatment or iii) both.

A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis according to claim 21 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes at least the heparin surface treatment and wherein the heparin surface treatment provides heparin present in an amount to provide bioactivity of the heparin of an AT-III binding of at least 4 pmol/cm².

23. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis according to claim 21 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes at least the heparin surface treatment and wherein the heparin surface treatment provides heparin present in an amount to provide bioactivity of the heparin of a thrombin deactivation of at least O.4 IU/cm².

28. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis according to claim 21 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes a plurality of polypropylene mesh layers wherein only one polypropylene mesh layer includes the acrylic surface treatment.

30. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis according to claim 21 wherein the acrylic surface treatment is on only one tissue-facing surface of the prosthesis.

34. A polymeric synthetic surgical prosthesis according to claim 21 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes at least one polypropylene mesh layer having an acrylic surface treatment and a collagen surface treatment coupled to the acrylic surface treatment and the heparin treatment coupled to the collagen treatment.

35. A polymeric synthetic surgical mesh prosthesis according to claim 21 wherein the mesh prosthesis includes at least one polypropylene mesh layer having an acrylic surface treatment and the heparin treatment coupled to the acrylic treatment.

61. A hernia repair prosthesis comprising:

A polyolefin substrate;

A hydrogel surface treatment bonded to the polyolefin substrate; and

One of i) collagen surface treatment bonded to the hydrogel, and ii) polysaccharide containing surface treatment bonded to the hydrogel.

62. The hernia repair prosthesis according to claim 61 wherein the chemically bonded hydrogel surface treatment is an acrylamide surface treatment.

63. The hernia repair prosthesis according to claim 61 wherein the hernia repair prosthesis includes a polysaccharide containing surface treatment bonded to the hydrogel which includes heparin.

64. The hernia repair prosthesis according to claim 61 wherein the hernia repair prosthesis includes a collagen surface treatment bonded to the hydrogel.

65. The hernia repair prosthesis according to claim 64 wherein the hernia repair prosthesis includes a polysaccharide containing surface treatment bonded to the collagen.

66. The hernia repair prosthesis according to claim 61 wherein the A polyolefin substrate is a polypropylene mesh.
