Abstract

An intravenous pump system includes an intravenous pump having an air bubble detector, a separate air trap module and a patient line. The air trap module is connectable to a set interface upon which the pump can operate. The air trap module includes an air chamber capable of receiving fluids and air, a plurality of valves controlling the flow of the fluids and air, and an air vent. The patient line is connectable to the air trap module and to a patient. The air trap module includes an actuator to control the state of the valves to enable, at least during a venting mode, the pump to push air out of the air chamber via the vent without disconnecting the patient from the patient line.

Claims

1. An intravenous pump system comprising:

an intravenous pump having an air bubble detector;

a separate air trap module connectable to a set interface operatable upon by said intravenous pump, said air trap module comprising an air chamber capable of receiving fluids and air, a plurality of valves controlling the flow of said fluids and air, and an air vent;

a patient line connectable to said air trap module and to a patient,

wherein said air trap module comprises an actuator to control the state of said valves to enable, at least during a venting mode, said pump to push air out of said air chamber via said vent without disconnecting said patient from said patient line.

2. The system according to claim 1 and also comprising a return line connectable to said set interface and to said air trap module.

3. The system according to claim 2 and wherein at least during said venting mode, said pump pumps fluid through said return line and back into said air chamber.

4. The system according to claim 1 and wherein said valves comprise:

a venting valve at least to control the flow of air out of said air chamber;

a patient valve controlling said patient line; and

a lower valve at least to control the flow of fluid from said air chamber to said set interface.

6. The system according to claim 4 wherein said air trap module additionally comprises a bypass path to pass incoming fluid to said set interface to be pumped into said air chamber via said return line when said venting valve is open.

8. The system according to claim 6 and wherein said actuator comprises means to change said valves among a plurality of states.

9. The system according to claim 6 and wherein one of said states is a treatment state wherein at least said patient line valve is open, said venting valve is shut and said bypass path is closed.

10. The system according to claim 9 wherein one of said states is a priming state wherein said patient line valve is open, said venting valve is shut, said bypass path is closed and an upper fluid valve, near the top of said air chamber, is open.

11. The system according to claim 9 wherein one of said plurality of states is a sterilization state wherein all said valves are open.

14. The system according to claim 1 and wherein said actuator is one or more electro mechanical actuators controllable by said pump.

15. The system according to claim 14 and wherein said air detector of said pump detects the presence of air and controls said valves to change among treatment, venting and priming states accordingly.

17. The system according to claim 1 and wherein said valves comprise:

a venting valve at least to control the flow of air out of said air chamber;

a patient valve controlling said patient line;

an upper fluid valve, near the top of said air chamber; and

. a lower valve at least to control the flow of fluid from said air chamber to said set interface.

21. An intravenous line comprising:

an air trap module at least connectable to a source of intravenous fluid;

a set interface connectable to said air trap module and operatable upon by an intravenous pump;

a return line connectable to said set interface and to said air trap module; and

a patient line connectable to said air trap module and to a patient.

22. The intravenous line according to claim 21 and wherein said air trap module comprises:

an air chamber capable of receiving fluids and air, said air chamber having at least a venting valve at least to control the flow of air out of said air chamber and a lower valve at least to control the flow of fluid into said set interface; and

a patient valve controlling said patient line,

wherein said air trap module comprises an actuator to control the state of said valves to enable, at least during a venting mode, said pump to pump fluid through said return line and back into said air chamber to push air out of said air chamber via said vent without disconnecting said patient from said patient line.

23. The line according to claim 21 and wherein said air trap module additionally comprises:

a bypass path to pass incoming fluid to said set interface to be pumped into said air chamber via said return line when said venting valve is open.

24. The line according to claim 22 wherein said air chamber holds 2-4 ml.

25. The line according to claim 21 and wherein said actuator comprises means to change said valves among a plurality of states.

29. The line according to claim 21 and wherein said actuator is a manual dial.

30. The line according to claim 29 and wherein said manual dial comprises an actuator locking mechanism to lock said actuator between states.

38. A method for an intravenous pump, the method comprising:

during venting of an air trap module, pumping a pre-defined volume downstream of said pump as a function of the volume of an air trap chamber forming part of said air trap module.
