Abstract

Navigating on a display includes tracking motion of an input tool on a display, comparing a motion of the input tool to a threshold, and changing a position of the visible portion of a page of information on the display if the input tool motion exceeds the threshold. The position of the visible portion of the page of information on the display is constrained if the motion does not exceed the threshold.

Claims

13. A method comprising:

displaying, on a touchscreen display, a first view of content;

detecting a motion of an object on or near the touchscreen display, wherein detecting the motion comprises detecting a vertical component of the motion and detecting a horizontal component of the motion;

determining whether the horizontal component meets a predetermined threshold;

in response to the detected motion, repositioning a viewable portion of the content from the first view to a second view of the content; and

in response to a determination that the horizontal component does not meet the predetermined threshold, preventing horizontal movement of the viewable portion as it is repositioned from the first view to the second view.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the object comprises a finger.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein repositioning the viewable portion comprises repositioning the viewable portion simultaneously with the detected motion.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising, in response to a determination that the horizontal component does meet the predetermined threshold, allowing horizontal movement of the viewable portion as it is repositioned from the first view to the second view.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the detected motion comprises a touch-and-drag motion.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein repositioning the viewable portion from the first view to the second view comprises scrolling the viewable portion from the first view to the second view.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the predetermined threshold comprises a user-defined threshold.

20. The method of claim 13, further comprising animating the repositioning of the viewable portion to give the appearance of motion.

21. The method of claim 13, further comprising automatically centering the viewable portion with respect to a portion of the content.

22. The method of claim 13, wherein detecting the motion comprises tracking a distance of the vertical component and a distance of the horizontal component.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein determining whether the horizontal component meets the predetermined threshold comprises comparing the distance of the horizontal component to the predetermined threshold.

24. The method of claim 13, wherein the touchscreen display is implemented within a mobile device.

25. The method of claim 13, wherein the content comprises a webpage.

26. A method comprising:

displaying, on a touchscreen display, a first view of content;

detecting a motion of an object on or near the touchscreen display, wherein detecting the motion comprises detecting a vertical component of the motion and detecting a horizontal component of the motion;

determining whether the vertical component meets a predetermined threshold;

in response to the detected motion, repositioning a viewable portion of the content from the first view to a second view of the content; and

in response to a determination that the vertical component does not meet the predetermined threshold, preventing vertical movement of the viewable portion as it is repositioned from the first view to the second view.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the object comprises a finger.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein repositioning the viewable portion comprises repositioning the viewable portion simultaneously with the detected motion.

29. The method of claim 26, further comprising, in response to a determination that the vertical component does meet the predetermined threshold, allowing vertical movement of the viewable portion as it is repositioned from the first view to the second view.

30. The method of claim 26, wherein the detected motion comprises a touch-and-drag motion.

31. The method of claim 26, wherein repositioning the viewable portion from the first view to the second view comprises scrolling the viewable portion from the first view to the second view.

32. The method of claim 26, wherein the predetermined threshold comprises a user-defined threshold.

33. The method of claim 26, further comprising animating the repositioning of the viewable portion to give the appearance of motion.

34. The method of claim 26, wherein detecting the motion comprises tracking a distance of the vertical component and a distance of the horizontal component.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein determining whether the vertical component meets the predetermined threshold comprises comparing the distance of the vertical component to the predetermined threshold.

36. The method of claim 26, wherein the touchscreen display is implemented within a mobile device.

37. The method of claim 26, wherein the content comprises a webpage.

38. A device comprising:

a touchscreen display;

at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium; and

at least one processor programmed to;

display, on the touchscreen display, a first view of content;

detect a motion of an object on or near the touchscreen display, wherein detecting the motion comprises detecting a vertical component of the motion and detecting a horizontal component of the motion;

determine whether the horizontal component meets a predetermined threshold;

in response to the detected motion, reposition a viewable portion of the content from the first view to a second view of the content; and

in response to a determination that the horizontal component does not meet the predetermined threshold, prevent horizontal movement of the viewable portion as it is repositioned from the first view to the second view.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to reposition the viewable portion simultaneously with the detected motion.

40. The device of claim 38, wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to, in response to a determination that the horizontal component does meet the predetermined threshold, allow horizontal movement of the viewable portion as it is repositioned from the first view to the second view.

41. The device of claim 38, wherein the detected motion comprises a touch-and-drag motion.

42. The device of claim 38, wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to automatically center the viewable portion with respect to a portion of the content.
