1. A method comprising:

  • receiving input to purchase an item at a mobile device from a user, the mobile device including a mobile device display, a mobile device processor, a mobile device radio transceiver configured to support voice and data interactions through a first communication channel, and a mobile device memory configured to maintain a point-of-sale (POS) midlet, the POS midlet configured to execute a payment authorization protocol between itself and a secure element, wherein the secure element is coupled to the mobile device, the secure element comprising a secure element memory, a secure element processor, and a secure element wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data including payment credentials to the POS midlet through a second communication channel, wherein the first communication channel is different from the second communication channel;

    calculating a total purchase amount at the mobile device;

    executing the payment authorization protocol between the mobile device and the secure element, the secure element including a secure element payment application configured to formulate an encrypted and cryptographically signed payment authorization for the total purchase amount, wherein the payment authorization protocol is executed in response to a near field communication interaction between the POS midlet and the secure element payment application;

    transmitting a payment authorization request from the POS midlet to a financial institution through the first communication channel;

    receiving at the POS midlet a payment authorization for the purchase through the first communication channel;

    receiving a digital artifact at the secure element from the POS midlet through the second communication channel, wherein the digital artifact is also received at the mobile device from the management server through the first communication channel after the management server receives the digital artifact from the POS midlet; and

    displaying the digital artifact on the mobile device display.
