Abstract

Media presentations including related content are described, including presenting a workspace and a content shelf, presenting a media presentation in the workspace, designating a portion of the media presentation based on parsing the media presentation according to a predetermined criterion, and displaying a content related to the portion of the media presentation in the content shelf.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

searching a media presentation document to identify a plurality of portions of the document satisfying one or more predetermined search criteria;

determining content related to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document;

receiving navigation input indicating display of a page of the document in a workspace;

in response to said receiving the navigation input, displaying the page of the document in the workspace;

in response to said displaying the page of the document;

automatically designating, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the displayed page, wherein said designating comprises displaying each portion of the plurality of identified portions as visually distinct from remaining content within the displayed page; and

automatically displaying, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that are present in the displayed page, wherein the content shelf is displayed concurrently with the workspace; and

repeating, for each of one or more subsequently received navigation inputs;

displaying a new page of the document in the workspace;

in response to said displaying the new page;

automatically designating, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the new displayed page, and

automatically displaying, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that are present in the new displayed page; and

such that each time a new page is displayed, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the new page are automatically designated in the workspace and the corresponding related content part automatically displayed in the content shelf

2. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the one or more predetermined search criteria is whether a term is uncommon, wherein an uncommon term is likely to be unfamiliar to a viewer of the document.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the one or more predetermined search criteria is whether a term is a proper name.

4. The method of claim 1,

wherein one of subsequently displayed pages within the workspace comprises two or more portions of the plurality of identified portions;

and

wherein the two or more portions of the plurality of identified portions are both automatically designated to visually distinguish from remaining content in the display of the page.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

simultaneously displaying, in the content shelf, the respective related content part for each of the two or more portions of the plurality of identified portions that are both designated in the display of the page; and

displaying a respective visual cue for each related content part to indicate the respective portion of the two or more portions with which the respective content part corresponds.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising presenting a navigation shelf comprising a navigational element to navigate the media presentation.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying, within the content shelf and based on the one or more portions, one or more of;

a definition of an uncommon term when the one or more portions comprise the uncommon term,

a biography when the one or more portions comprise a personal name, or

a map when the one or more portions comprise a place name.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said designating each one of the one or more portions comprises highlighting each portion of the one or more identified portions in the document.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said displaying the page of the document comprises displaying the page in an electronic book.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said displaying a media presentation document comprises presenting a video.

11. A method, comprising:

searching a media presentation document to identify a plurality of portions of the document satisfying one or more predetermined search criteria;

determining content related to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document;

receiving navigation input indicating display of a page of the document in a workspace;

in response to said receiving the navigation input. displaying the page of the document in the workspace; and

in response to said displaying the page of the document, automatically designating, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the displayed page, wherein said designating comprises displaying each portion of the plurality of identified portions as visually distinct from remaining content within the displayed page;

prior to said displaying the page of the document, generating content related to each respective portion of the one or more identified portions of the displayed page;

in response to said displaying the page of the document, automatically displaying, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document, wherein the content shelf is displayed concurrently with the workspace; and

repeating, for each of one or more subsequently received navigation inputs;

displaying a new page of the document in the workspace;

in response to said displaying the new page;

automatically designating, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the new displayed page, and

automatically displaying, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that are present in the new displayed page; and

such that each time a new page is displayed, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the new page are automatically designated in the workspace and the corresponding related content part automatically displayed in the content shelf.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein one of the one or more predetermined search criteria is whether a term is an uncommon term, wherein an uncommon term is likely to be unfamiliar to a viewer of the document.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein said searching a media presentation document comprises determining whether each portion of the one or more portions of the document comprises a capitalized term.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein said searching a media presentation document comprises determining whether each portion of the one or more portions of the document comprises a quotation.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

for each portion of the one or more portions of the document, determining whether the portion comprises a personal name; and

wherein said generating the related content comprises obtaining a biography if the portion comprises a personal name.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

for each portion of the one or more portions of the document, determining whether the portion comprises a place name; and

wherein said generating the related content comprises obtaining a map if the portion comprises a place name.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein said generating the related content comprises obtaining a definition of the uncommon term.

18. A system, comprising:

a memory configured to store a media presentation; and

a processor configured to;

search a media presentation document to identify a plurality of portions of the document satisfying one or more predetermined search criteria;

determine content related to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document;

receive navigation input indicating display of a page of the document in a workspace;

in response to receiving navigation input indicating display of a page of the document in the workspace, display the page of the document in the workspace;

in response to displaying the page of the document in the workspace;

automatically designate, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the displayed page;

automatically display, based on automatically designating each portion of the plurality of identified portions, each portion of the plurality of identified portions as visually distinct from remaining content within the displayed page; and

automatically display, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that are present in the displayed page, wherein the content shelf is displayed concurrently with the workspace; and

repeat, for each of one or more subsequently received navigation inputs;

displaying a new page of the document in the workspace;

in response to said displaying the new page;

automatically designating, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the new displayed page, and

automatically displaying, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that are present in the new displayed page; and

such that each time a new page is displayed, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the new page are automatically designated in the workspace and the corresponding related content part automatically displayed in the content shelf

19. The system of claim 18, wherein one of the one or more predetermined search criteria is whether a term is uncommon, wherein an uncommon term is likely to be unfamiliar to a viewer of the document.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured to display a definition of the term.

21. The system of claim 18, wherein the processor is configured to highlight each portion of the one or more identified portions in the document.

22. A computer program product embodied in a non- transitory computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions executable to:

search a media presentation document to identify a plurality of portions of the document satisfying one or more predetermined search criteria;

determine content related to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document;

receive navigation input indicating display of a page of the document in a workspace;

in response to receiving navigation input indicating display of a page of the document in the workspace, display the page of the document in the workspace;

in response to displaying the page of the document in the workspace;

automatically designate, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the displayed page;

automatically display, based on automatically designating each portion of the plurality of identified portions, each portion of the plurality of identified portions as visually distinct from remaining content within the displayed page; and

automatically display, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that are present in the displayed page, wherein the content shelf is displayed concurrently with the workspace; and

repeat, for each of one or more subsequently received navigation inputs;

displaying a new page of the document in the workspace;

in response to said displaying the new page;

automatically designating, in the workspace, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that is present in the new displayed page, and

automatically displaying, in a content shelf, each respective part of the related content corresponding to each respective portion of the plurality of identified portions of the document that are present in the new displayed page; and

such that each time a new page is displayed, each portion of the plurality of identified portions of the new page are automatically designated in the workspace and the corresponding related content part automatically displayed in the content shelf

23. The computer program product of claim 22, wherein one of the one or more predetermined search criteria is whether a term is uncommon, wherein an uncommon term is likely to be unfamiliar to a viewer of the document.

24. The computer program product of claim 23, wherein the content shelf comprises a display of a definition of the uncommon term.

25. The computer program product of claim 22, wherein said designating each portion of the one or more identified portions of the document comprises highlighting each portion of the one or more identified portions of the document.
