Abstract

A golf club head with sound tuning composite members forming at least a portion of the surface of the golf club head is disclosed herein. The composite members being a composite layer made out of a sandwiched core layer that is interposed inside the midsection of the composite member to provide vibration damping and sound tuning characteristics.

Claims

1. A golf club head comprising:

a hitting face providing a surface for striking a golf ball;

a body section including a toe section, a heel section and a sole section, the body section extending from said hitting face and comprising a metallic member and a composite member,

the composite member comprising a sandwiching outer layer, a sandwiching inner layer, and a sandwiched core layer.

2. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the body section, the sandwiching outer layer, and the sandwiching inner layer comprise different materials.

3. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiched core layer comprises a material selected from a plastic polymer, an aluminum polymer, a foam, a resin impregnated paper, balsa wood, bucky paper, filled vinyl polymer, a visco elastic polymer, rubber, and cotton.

4. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiched core layer comprises a honeycomb, a hexagonal, a trapezoidal, a triangular, a pyramidal, a conic, a cylindrical, a spherical, a rectangular or a rhombus shape.

5. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiching outer layer and the sandwiching inner layer comprise plies of pre-peg material, a polyurethane, a polyester, a polyamide, an ionomer, a continuous fiber pre-peg material, an injection molded plastic, or bucky paper.

6. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiching outer layer and the sandwiching inner layer comprise aluminum, titanium, magnesium, or carbon fiber.

7. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiching outer layer and the sandwiching inner layer comprise the same material.

8. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiching outer layer and the sandwiching inner layer comprise different materials.

9. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiched core damps vibrations in the club head when the face strikes a golf ball.

10. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the sandwiched core adds structural stiffness to the golf club head.

11. A golf club head comprising:

a hitting face providing a surface for striking a golf ball;

a body section including a crown section and a sole section, the body section extending from said hitting face, the hitting face, crown section, and sole sections forming an interior cavity of the club head, the body section comprising a body material having multiple sandwiched core layers interposed inside the body material.

12. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the body material comprises a composite material.

13. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the body material comprises carbon fiber.

14. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the multiple sandwiched core layers are connected.

15. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the multiple sandwiched core layers comprise a material selected from a plastic polymer, an aluminum polymer, a foam, a resin impregnated paper, balsa wood, bucky paper, filled vinyl polymer, a visco elastic polymer, rubber, and cotton.

16. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the multiple sandwiched core layers comprise honeycomb, hexagonal, trapezoidal, triangular, pyramidal, conical, cylindrical, spherical, rectangular or rhomboidal shapes.

17. The golf club of claim 11, wherein the multiple sandwiched core layers protrude into the cavity of the golf club head.

18. The golf club of claim 11, wherein the multiple sandwiched core layers protrude out of the golf club head.

19. The golf club of claim 11, wherein the multiple sandwiched core layers have a uniform thickness.

20. The golf club of claim 11, wherein the multiple sandwiched core layers are placed toward the toe section, the leading edge, the trailing edge, on the crown, on the sole, or on the skirt.
