1. A full-core biopsy needle, comprising:

  • an outer tubular component having a body portion, a tip portion and a lumen through said body and tip portions, said tip portion having a conical tapered outer surface extending entirely around the longitudinal axis of the component, said component having a portion joining said body portion and said tip portion that is rounded externally and forms a boss within said lumen, said lumen having a first diameter proximal of said boss and a second smaller diameter distal of said boss, said lumen with said second smaller diameter extending through said tip; and

    a middle cannula having a body portion and a tip portion, said tip portion having a plurality of fingers, at least a first and second of said fingers being separated by a gap, said middle cannula being within said lumen of said component, wherein said component and said cannula have a first relative position with said fingers proximal of said boss, and said cannula adapted to be moved distally with respect to said component into a second relative position, said second relative position being the limit of possible distal movement of said cannula with respect to said component and being a position in which at least said first and second fingers are deflected inward by said boss, wherein in said second relative position at least a portion of said first and second fingers point toward each other but do not close the entirety of said gap.
