Abstract

A catheter system including an accelerometer-based sensing assembly is provided. In particular the present teachings relate to an accelerometer based assembly used to determine contact between a catheter and surrounding proximate tissue, such as cardiac tissue. An embodiment of such a system may, for example, be used for visualization, mapping, ablation, or other methods of diagnosis and treatment of tissue and/or surrounding areas.

Claims

1. A catheter comprising:

a shaft having a proximal portion, and a distal portion;

an electrode having a main body extending along an axis and including a tip and an axially opposite base wherein the base is configured to be coupled to said distal portion of the shaft, and wherein the base of said electrode includes a lumen having a proximally-facing opening; and

an accelerometer disposed in the lumen to thereby couple said accelerometer to said electrode such that when said electrode is displaced said accelerometer experiences an acceleration of said electrode, said accelerometer being configured to generate a signal indicative of the acceleration of said electrode.

2. The catheter of claim 1 wherein said accelerometer is positioned to detect an acceleration of said electrode with respect to said axis.

3. The catheter of claim 1, wherein said signal is representative of the magnitude of said acceleration.

6. The catheter of claim 1 comprising a plurality of accelerometers positioned circumferentially around said axis.

7. The catheter of claim 6, wherein said accelerometers are located eccentrically with respect to said axis.

8. The catheter of claim 6, wherein said plurality of accelerometers are configured to provide respective signals indicative of at least one of a magnitude, an orientation and a directionality of said electrode acceleration relative to said axis.

16. The catheter of claim 1, wherein said accelerometer is electrically isolated form the electrode.

17. The catheter of claim 1, wherein said accelerometer is thermally isolated from said electrode.

18. The catheter of claim 1, wherein said accelerometer is configured to continually monitor the displacement of said electrode.

19. The catheter of claim 1, further comprising force determining means responsive to said accelerometer signals, and configured to provide signals indicative of the force on the electrode.

20. The catheter of claim 19, further comprising contact detection means configured to provide an indication of electrode contact with a treatment area, the contact detection means configured to receive signals from at least one of an accelerometer and said force determining means.

21. A catheter system, comprising:

a catheter including

a shaft having a proximal portion and a distal portion;

an electrode coupled to said distal portion of the shaft;

an accelerometer coupled to said electrode and configured to generate a signal indicative of an acceleration of said electrode;

a receiver electrically coupled to said catheter configured to receive said signal indicative of the acceleration of said electrode, said receiver including a processor that is configured to process said signal to produce a parameter indicative of an applied force experienced by said electrode of said catheter.

The system of claim 21 wherein said parameter is a first parameter, said receiver being configured to process at least one of said acceleration indicative signal and said applied force indicative parameter to produce a second parameter indicative of a degree of electrode contact with a surface.

23. The system of claim 22 wherein said second parameter indicates that said electrode is in contact with the surface.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein said processor is configured to determine contact of said electrode with the surface when a first force applied to the electrode as indicated by the first parameter is greater than a second force acting on said catheter shaft.

25. The system of claim 23 wherein said processor is configured to determine contact of said electrode with the surface by processing said acceleration indicative signal to determine when electrode accelerations are contemporaneous with the systole and diastole of a cardiac chamber.

26. The system of claim 23 wherein said processor is configured to determine contact by detecting, in accordance with at least said acceleration indicative signal, repeated acceleration in a first direction followed by an acceleration in a second direction opposite of said first direction.

27. The system of claim 23 wherein said receiver is configured to output resultant values selected from the group comprising (i) said acceleration indicative signal;

(ii) said first parameter indicative of the force applied to said electrode; and

(iii) said second parameter indicative of said degree of contact, to one or more user interface devices.

28. The system of claim 23 wherein said receiver is configured to output a notification indicating that said electrode is no longer in contact with the surface.

29. A method comprising:

providing a catheter having a proximal portion and a flexible distal portion, the proximal portion being stiff relative to the flexible distal portion;

providing an electrode coupled to the flexible distal portion, and an accelerometer coupled to the electrode; and

monitoring an output of the accelerometer to recognize when the electrode comes into contact with a tissue surface in a body of a patient.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein said tissue surface comprises an endocardial wall of a heart of the patient, said method further comprising:

detecting when the electrode contacts the tissue surface by recognizing, using said accelerometer output, when the electrode motion corresponds to a motion of the tissue surface.

31. The method of claim 30 further comprising:

detecting when the electrode is no longer in contact with the tissue surface.

32. The method of claim 29, wherein monitoring comprises monitoring the output of the accelerometer to further recognize to what degree the electrode is in contact with the tissue surface.
