Abstract

A medical device including an operation determiner for determining operations to be performed by the medical device in response to a gesture of the device with respect to the medical device, and an operation data accessor for accessing operation data for the operation performed by the medical device.

Claims

1. A medical device comprising:

an operation determiner for determining operations to be performed by the medical device in response to a gesture of a second device with respect to the medical device, the gesture comprising movement of or activity in connection with the second device for association of the second device with the medical device; and

an operation data accessor for accessing operation data for the operation performed by the medical device.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the operation comprises:

an operation performed in response to the gesture.

3. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the operation comprises:

an operation performed based on subsequent accessing of the operation data.

4. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the operation comprises:

an operation performed in response to bi-directional request of the operation data between the medical device and the second device.

5. The medical device of claim 1, further comprising:

memory for storing the operation data.

6. The medical device of claim 1, further comprising:

a mode controller for controlling a mode of the medical device based on the gesture.

7. The medical device of claim 1, further comprising:

a privilege determiner for determining privileges of a user.

8. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the operation determiner further comprising:

a device state determiner for determining a state of the medical device, wherein the determining the operation to be performed by the medical device is based, in part, on the state of the medical device.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical device is selected from a group consisting of:

infusion pumps, respirators, vital sign monitors and medication delivery systems.

10. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising:

a gesture sensor for detecting the gesture.

11. The medical device of claim 10, wherein the gesture sensor comprises an accelerometer.

12. The medical device of claim 10, wherein the gesture sensor comprises a gyroscope.

13. The medical device of claim 10, wherein the gesture sensor comprises an input sensor.

14. The medical device of claim 10, further comprising an association gesture determiner coupled to the gesture sensor for determining that the gesture is an association gesture.

15. The medical device of claim 14, wherein the association gesture determiner comprises a filter for filtering out unauthorized gestures or gestures that are not intended to initiate a request to associate the medical device with the second device.

16. The medical device of claim 14, wherein the association gesture determiner determines that the gesture is an association gesture based on one or more pre-defined association gesture patterns.

17. The medical device of claim 16, wherein the pre-defined association gesture patterns are based on one or more of:

three dimensional trajectory motion, maxima and minima acceleration within a time window, and detection of spike patterns.

18. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the gesture comprises a user positioning the second device to contact the medical device.

19. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the operation comprises associating the medical device with a patient.

20. A mobile device comprising:

an operation determiner for determining an operation to be performed by a medical device in response to a gesture of the mobile device with respect to the medical device, the gesture comprising movement of or activity in connection with the second device for association of the second device with the medical device; and

an operation data accessor for accessing operation data for the operation performed by the medical device.

21. The mobile device of claim 20, wherein the operation comprises:

an operation performed in response to the gesture.

22. The mobile device of claim 20, wherein the operation comprises:

an operation performed based on subsequent accessing of the operation data.

23. The mobile device of claim 20, wherein the operation comprises:

an operation performed in response to bi-directional request of the operation data between the medical device and a second device.

24. The mobile device of claim 20, further comprising:

memory for storing the operation data.

25. The mobile device of claim 20, further comprising:

a mode controller for controlling a mode of the medical device based on the gesture.

26. The mobile device of claim 20, further comprising:

a privilege determiner for determining privileges of a user.

27. The mobile device of claim 20, wherein the operation determiner further comprising:

a device state determiner for determining a state of the medical device, wherein the determining the operation to be performed by the medical device is based, in part, on the state of the medical device.

28. A method for performing an operation by a medical device, the method comprising:

determining operations to be performed by the medical device in response to a gesture of a second device with respect to the medical device, the gesture comprising movement of or activity in connection with the second device for association of the second device with the medical device;

accessing operation data for the operation performed by the medical device; and

performing the operation based, in part, on the gesture.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the accessing operation data for operation performed by the medical device comprises:

accessing operation data by the medical device.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein the accessing operation data for operation performed by the medical device comprises:

accessing operation data by the second device.

31. The method of claim 28, wherein the accessing operation data for operation performed by the medical device comprises:

accessing operation data from a medical management system.

32. The method of claim 28, wherein the performing the operation based, in part, on the gesture comprising:

performing the operation in response to the gesture.

33. The method of claim 28, wherein the performing the operation based, in part, on the gesture comprising:

performing the operation subsequent the accessing of the operation data.

34. The method of claim 28, wherein the performing the operation based, in part, on the gesture comprising:

performing the operation in response to a bi-directional request of the operation data between the medical device and the second device.

35. The method of claim 28, further comprising:

determining user privileges, wherein the determining an operation to be performed by the medical device is based, in part, on the privileges.

36. The method of claim 28, further comprising:

determining a state of the medical device, wherein the determining an operation to be performed by the medical device is based, in part, on the state of the device.

37. The method of claim 28, further comprising:

controlling a mode of the medical device based on the gesture.

38. A method comprising:

detecting, by a gesture sensor of a first device, a gesture, the gesture comprising movement of or activity in connection with the first device for association of the first device with a medical device;

searching, by a proximity detector in response to the gesture, for devices within a pre-defined proximity to the first device;

identifying the medical device within the pre-defined proximity; and

initiating communication between the first device and the first medical device.
