Abstract

Light emitter devices and methods with reduced dimensions and improved light output are provided. In one embodiment, a light emitter device includes a submount having an area of approximately 6 square millimeters (mm²) or less. The device can further include a light emitting chip on the submount and a lens disposed over the light emitting chip and positioned on the submount. The device can be operable for emitting light at approximately 100 lumens or higher.

Claims

1. A light emitter device comprising:

a submount, the submount having an area of approximately 6 square millimeters (mm²) or less;

a light emitting chip on the submount;

a lens disposed over the light emitting chip and positioned on the submount; and

the light emitter device being operable for emitting light at approximately 100 lumens or higher.

2. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the submount has a width of approximately 2.5 mm or less in at least one direction.

3. The light emitter device of claim 2, wherein the submount has a width of approximately 2.5 mm or less in at least two directions.

4. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the submount has a thickness of approximately 0.7 mm or less.

5. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the light emitting chip has an area of approximately 0.72 mm² or less.

6. The light emitter device of claim 5, wherein the light emitting chip has a width of approximately 0.85 mm or less in at least two directions.

7. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the light emitting chip has a thickness of approximately 0.34 mm or less.

8. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the lens has a radius of approximately 1.0 mm or more.

9. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the light emitter device has a height of approximately 1.85 mm or less.

10. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein a ratio of a width of the light emitting chip to a width of the submount is approximately 0.35 or less.

11. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein a ratio of a width of the lens to a width of the submount is approximately 0.85 or more.

12. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein a ratio of area of the lens to area of the submount is approximately 0.63 or more.

13. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein a ratio of width of the light emitting chip to width of the lens is approximately 0.4 or less.

14. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion between the lens and an edge of the submount of between approximately 0.3 and zero (0) mm.

15. The light emitter device of claim 14, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) such that the lens extends all the way to at least one edge of the submount.

16. The light emitter device of claim 15, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) on more than one edge of the submount such that the lens extends all the way to at least two or more different edges of the submount.

17. The light emitter device of claim 16, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) for all edges of the submount such that the lens extends all the way to all edges of the submount.

18. The light emitter device of claim 1, wherein the device further comprises top side electrical contacts.

19. A light emitter device comprising:

a submount having an area of approximately 6 mm² or less;

a light emitting chip on the submount, the light emitting chip having an area of approximately 0.72 mm² or less; and

a lens disposed over the light emitting chip and positioned on the submount;

wherein the light emitter device comprises an edge exclusion between the lens and an edge of the submount of between approximately 0.3 and zero (0) mm.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the light emitter device is operable for emitting light at approximately 100 lumens or more.

21. The device of claim 19, wherein the submount has a width of approximately 2.5 mm or less in at least one direction.

22. The device of claim 19, wherein the submount has a width of approximately 2.5 mm or less in at least two directions.

23. The device of claim 19, wherein the submount has a thickness of approximately 0.7 mm or less.

24. The device of claim 19, wherein the light emitting chip has a width of approximately 0.85 mm or less in at least two directions.

25. The device of claim 19, wherein the light emitting chip has a thickness of approximately 0.34 mm or less.

26. The device of claim 19, wherein the lens has a radius of approximately 1.0 mm or more.

27. The device of claim 19, wherein the light emitter device has a height of approximately 1.85 mm or less.

28. The device of claim 19, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) such that the lens extends all the way to at least one edge of the submount.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) on more than one edge of the submount such that the lens extends all the way to at least two or more different edges of the submount.

30. The device of claim 29, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) for all edges of the submount such that the lens extends all the way to all edges of the submount.

31. The device of claim 19, wherein the device further comprises top side electrical contacts.

32. A light emitter device comprising:

a submount having an area of approximately 6 mm² or less;

a light emitting chip on the submount; and

a lens disposed over the light emitting chip and positioned on the submount;

wherein a first ratio of a width of the light emitting chip to a width of the submount is approximately 0.35 or less;

wherein a second ratio of a width of the lens to a width of the submount is approximately 0.85 or more;

wherein a third ratio of area of the lens to area of the submount is approximately 0.63 or more; and

wherein a fourth ratio of width of the light emitting chip to width of the lens is approximately 0.4 or less.

33. The device of claim 32, wherein the light emitter device is operable for emitting light at approximately 100 lumens or more.

34. The device of claim 32, wherein the device further comprises top side electrical contacts.

35. A method of providing light from a light emitter device, the method comprising:

providing a light emitter device comprising;

a submount, the submount having an area of approximately 6 mm² or less;

a light emitting chip on the submount; and

a lens disposed over the light emitting chip and positioned on the submount; and

emitting light from the light emitter device with a light output of approximately 100 lumens or higher.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the submount has a width of approximately 2.5 mm or less in at least one direction.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the submount has a width of approximately 2.5 mm or less in at least two directions.

38. The method of claim 35, wherein the submount has a thickness of approximately 0.7 mm or less.

39. The method of claim 35, wherein the light emitting chip has an area of approximately 0.72 mm or less.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the light emitting chip has a width of approximately 0.85 mm or less in at least two directions.

41. The method of claim 35, wherein the light emitting chip has a thickness of approximately 0.34 mm or less.

42. The method of claim 35, wherein the lens has a radius of approximately 1.0 mm or more.

43. The method of claim 35, wherein the light emitter device has a height of approximately 1.85 mm or less.

44. The method of claim 35, wherein a ratio of a width of the light emitting chip to a width of the submount is approximately 0.35 or less.

45. The method of claim 35, wherein a ratio of a width of the lens to a width of the submount is approximately 0.9 or more.

46. The method of claim 35, wherein a ratio of area of the lens to area of the submount is approximately 0.63 or more.

47. The method of claim 35, wherein a ratio of width of the light emitting chip to width of the lens is approximately 0.4 or less.

48. The method of claim 35, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion between the lens and an edge of the submount of between approximately 0.3 and zero (0) mm.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) such that the lens extends all the way to at least one edge of the submount.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) on more than one edge of the submount such that the lens extends all the way to at least two or more different edges of the submount.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the light emitter device has an edge exclusion of zero (0) for all edges of the submount such that the lens extends all the way to all edges of the submount.

52. The method of claim 35, wherein the light emitter device is provided with top side electrical contacts.
