Abstract

Systems and methods for cellular or WIFI mobile traffic optimization based on public or private network destination are disclosed. One embodiment includes a mobile device whose traffic is optimized based on destination IP network type where the mobile device includes a local proxy which detects outgoing traffic and determines whether the outgoing traffic is directed towards a public IP network or private IP network. In general, the outgoing traffic is categorized as optimizable for mobile device battery conservation and/or network resource conservation if the outgoing traffic is directed towards the public IP network. Optimization of the outgoing traffic can be performed by a native operating system of the mobile device or an application that is non-native to the native operating system of the mobile device. The optimization can also be in part or in whole performed by a remote proxy in communication with the local proxy on the mobile device.

Claims

1. A method of cellular or WIFI traffic optimization based on public or private network destination, the method, comprising:

detecting traffic from a mobile device;

analyzing the destination network address;

in response to determining that the destination network address is directed towards a public network destination, optimizing the traffic from the mobile device for network resource conservation or mobile device resource conservation;

intercepting the traffic in order to optimize the traffic.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein, in response to determining that a destination of the destination network address is connected via gateway and not publicly routable, the traffic from the mobile device is not optimized.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein, the traffic is optimized, in response to determining the traffic is directed to a private network, and that the mobile device is subscribed to a mobile operator which also owns the private network to which the traffic is directed.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein, in response to determining from the destination network address, that the traffic is directed to a private network destination, the traffic from the mobile device is not optimized.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein, the private network address is directed to a private IP address space;

wherein, the private IP address space is defined by RFC 1918 or RFC 4193.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein, the traffic is intercepted by a local proxy on the mobile device.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein, the optimization is performed by the local proxy and/or a proxy server coupled to the local proxy remote from the mobile device.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein, the traffic includes a request sent over a cellular network at the mobile device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein, the traffic includes a request sent over a WIFI network at the mobile device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes batching requests originated from the mobile device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes categorization based on foreground or background traffic.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes prioritization of the traffic based on time criticality.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes alignment or delay of polling requests from the mobile device.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes monitoring of application behavior on the mobile device.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes optimizing the traffic based on user behavior at the mobile device.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes content caching at the mobile device to decrease future traffic requests from network access.

18. A system for mobile traffic optimization based on destination IP network type, the system, comprising:

a proxy server remote from a mobile device

wherein, the proxy server intercepts and optimizes traffic from the mobile device directed towards a publicly routable network destination.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein, the traffic includes a request sent over a WIFI network at the mobile device.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein, the proxy server further intercepts and optimizes traffic directed towards a private WIFI network operated or owned by a cellular network carrier to which the mobile device is subscribed.

21. The system of claim 18, further comprising, a local proxy on the mobile device;

wherein, the local proxy determines that the traffic is directed towards the publicly routable network destination.

22. The system of claim 18, further comprising, a local proxy on the mobile device;

wherein, the local proxy determines that the traffic is directed towards a private IP address;

wherein, the private IP address is defined by RFC 1918 or RFC 4193.

23. The system of claim 18, wherein, the optimization is performed by the local proxy and/or a proxy server coupled to the local proxy remote from the mobile device.

24. The system of claim 18, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes categorization based on foreground or background traffic.

25. The system of claim 18, wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes prioritization of the traffic based on time criticality or user behavior at the mobile device.

26. A mobile device whose traffic is optimized based on destination IP network type, comprising:

a processor coupled to a memory unit;

the memory unit having instructions stored there on, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to;

detect outgoing traffic;

determine whether the outgoing traffic is directed towards a public IP network or private IP network;

wherein, the outgoing traffic is categorized as optimizable for mobile device battery conservation if the outgoing traffic is directed towards the public IP network.

27. The mobile device of claim 26, wherein, content received as responses from the outgoing traffic that is categorized as being optimizable, is cached locally on the mobile device.

28. The mobile device of claim 26, wherein, the optimization of the outgoing traffic is performed by a native operating system of the mobile device.

29. The mobile device of claim 26, wherein, the optimization of the outgoing traffic is performed by an application that is non-native to the native operating system of the mobile device.

30. The mobile device of claim 26, wherein, the outgoing traffic accesses a cellular network or a WIFI network.

31. A method of cellular or WIFI traffic optimization based on public or private network destination, the method, comprising:

in response to determining that a destination network address for traffic of a mobile device includes a public network destination,

optimizing the traffic from the mobile device for network resource conservation or mobile device resource conservation;

wherein, the optimizing the traffic includes content caching at the mobile device to decrease future traffic requests from network access.
