Abstract

A system for processing mobile payment transactions is described, the system includes a mobile electronic device having a mobile wallet module for initiating payment transactions from a mobile payment account associated with a payment service provider and operable to communicate with the payment service provider via a data network to settle the payment transaction. The mobile electronic device receives and stores data defining an off-line enabled merchant interface when the mobile electronic device is connected to the data network, processes an off-line payment transaction through the stored merchant interface when the mobile electronic device is not connected to the data network, and communicates details of the off-line payment transaction to the payment service provider when the mobile electronic device is re-connected to the data network.

Claims

1. A system for processing mobile payment transactions, comprising:

a mobile electronic device communicating with a payment service provider over a data network;

themobile electronic device having a mobile wallet module for initiating payment transactions from a mobile payment account associated with the payment service provider and operable to communicate with the payment service provider via the data network to settle the payment transaction;

wherein themobile electronic device enables a user to initiate an off-line payment transaction when the mobile electronic device is not connected to the data network; and

wherein the mobile electronic device communicates details of the off-line payment transaction to the payment service provider when the mobile electronic device is re-connected to the data network.

2. The system of claim 1, further including a remote database of purchasable entities, the mobile electronic device downloading details of one or more purchasable entities when the mobile electronic device is connected to the data network.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the mobile electronic device comprises an off-line credit limit associated with the mobile payment account.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the mobile electronic device checks that a user-initiated off-line payment transaction does not exceed the off-line credit limit.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the mobile wallet module stores a downloaded entity as a purchased entity after an off-line credit limit check and before the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the payment service provider settles the off-line payment transaction in response to receipt of the details and communicates confirmation of a settled transaction to the mobile electronic device.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile electronic device receives user input to initiate a plurality of off-line payment transactions and to automatically transmit details of the plurality of off-line payment transaction to associated payment service providers when the mobile electronic device is reconnected to a data network.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile electronic device stores data identifying a plurality of mobile payment accounts associated with the mobile wallet module.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile electronic device comprises a secure memory for storing data associated with the mobile wallet module.

10. A method of processing payment transactions by a mobile wallet module in a mobile electronic device, the method comprising of the steps of:

initiating an off-line payment transaction when the mobile electronic device is not connected to a data network, and

communicating details of the off-line payment transaction to a payment service provider when the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the mobile wallet module storing data defining an amount of stored funds that is available for the off-line payment transaction.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the mobile electronic device checking that a user-initiated off-line payment transaction does not exceed the amount of stored funds that is available for the off-line payment transaction.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the mobile wallet module completing the off-line payment transaction using the stored funds when the mobile electronic device is not connected to the data network.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising downloading details of one or more purchasable entities from a remote database when the mobile electronic device is connected to the data network.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising storing a downloaded entity as a purchased entity after checking available stored funds and before the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising the payment service provider settling the off-line payment transaction in response to receiving off-line payment transaction details and communicating confirmation of a settled transaction to the mobile electronic device.

17. The method of claim 10, further comprising the mobile handset receiving user input to initiate a plurality of off-line payment transactions and automatically transmitting details of the off-line payment transaction to associated payment service providers when the mobile electronic device is reconnected to a data network.

18. A system for processing mobile payment transactions, comprising:

a mobile electronic device having a mobile wallet module for initiating payment transactions from a mobile payment account associated with a payment service provider and communicating with the payment service provider via a data network to settle the payment transaction, the mobile electronic device comprises means for receiving and storing data defining at least a portion of a merchant interface when the mobile electronic device is connected to the data network,

means for processing an off-line payment transaction through the stored merchant interface when the mobile electronic device is not connected to the data network, and

means for communicating details of the off-line payment transaction to the payment service provider when the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the means for receiving and storing data downloads the at least a portion of a merchant interface from a remote server when the mobile electronic device is connected to the data network.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the means for communicating communicates details of the off-line payment transaction to the remote server when the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

21. The system of claim 19, wherein the at least a portion of a merchant interface comprises data defining one or more user interface screens for initiating and completing an off-line purchase.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the off-line purchase comprises receiving user selection of one or more purchasable entities, determining availability of funds and storing details of purchased entities as an off-line payment transaction.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the mobile electronic device comprises an off-line credit limit associated with a predefined funding account.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the mobile electronic device is operable to determine availability of funds in the off-line purchase by checking that an off-line payment transaction does not exceed an off-line credit limit.

25. The system of claim 22, wherein the mobile wallet module stores data defining an amount of stored funds that is available for the off-line payment transaction.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the mobile electronic device determines availability of funds in the off-line purchase by checking that a user-initiated off-line payment transaction does not exceed the amount of stored funds that is available for the off-line payment transaction.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the mobile wallet module completes the off-line payment transaction using the stored funds when the mobile electronic device is not connected to the data network.

28. The system of claim 24, wherein the mobile wallet module stores details of a purchased entity after determining that funds are available and before the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

29. The system of claim 18, wherein the payment service provider settles the off-line payment transaction in response to receipt of the details of the off-line payment transaction and communicates confirmation of the settled transaction to the mobile electronic device.

30. The system of claim 18, wherein the merchant interface is a website for display in a browser application of the mobile electronic device.

31. The system of claim 18, wherein the mobile electronic device stores data identifying a plurality of mobile payment accounts associated with the mobile wallet module.

32. The system of claim 18, wherein the mobile electronic device comprises a secure memory for storing data associated with the mobile wallet module.

33. A method of processing mobile payment transactions by a mobile wallet module in a mobile electronic device that connects a data network in an online mode, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving and storing data defining at least a portion of a merchant website when the mobile electronic device is in an online mode,

processing an off-line payment transaction through the stored merchant website when the mobile electronic device is not connected to the data network, and

communicating details of the off-line payment transaction to a payment service provider when the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the step of receiving and storing data includes downloading at least a portion of the merchant website from a remote server.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the step of communicating includes communicating details of the off-line payment transaction to the remote server when the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

36. The method of claim 34, wherein the at least a portion of the merchant website comprises data defining one or more user interface screens for initiating and completing an off-line purchase.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the off-line purchase comprises receiving user selection of one or more purchasable entities, determining availability of funds and storing details of purchased entities as an off-line payment transaction.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the mobile wallet module of the mobile electronic device includes an off-line credit limit associated with a predefined funding account.

39. The method of claim 38, further comprising the mobile electronic device determining availability of funds in the off-line purchase by checking that an off-line payment transaction does not exceed an off-line credit limit.

40. The method of claim 36, further comprising the mobile wallet module storing data defining an amount of stored funds that is available for the off-line payment transaction.

41. The method of claim 40, further comprising the mobile electronic device determining availability of funds in the off-line purchase by checking that a user-initiated off-line payment transaction does not exceed the amount of stored funds available for the off-line payment transaction.

42. The method of claim 41, further comprising the mobile wallet module completing the off-line payment transaction using the stored funds when the mobile electronic device is not connected to the data network.

43. The method of claim 39, further comprising the mobile wallet module storing details of a purchased entity after determining that funds are available and before the mobile electronic device is reconnected to the data network.

44. The method of claim 33, further comprising the payment service provider settling the off-line payment transaction in response to receipt of details of the off-line payment transaction and communicating confirmation of a settled transaction to the mobile electronic device.

45. The method of claim 33, wherein the merchant interface is a website for display in a browser application of the mobile electronic device.

46. The method of claim 33, further comprising the mobile electronic device storing data identifying a plurality of mobile payment accounts associated with the mobile wallet module.

47. The method of claim 33, further comprising the mobile electronic device storing data associated with the mobile wallet module in a secure memory.
