Abstract

Flexible and dynamic integration schemas of a traffic management system with various network operators for network traffic alleviation are disclosed. One embodiment includes a method of integration of content caching with a network operator for traffic alleviation a wireless network, including detecting, by an operator proxy of the network operator, a poll from an application on a mobile device which would have been served using a cache element from a local cache on the mobile device, after the cache element stored in the local cache has been invalidated and forwarding the poll from the application on the mobile device to a proxy server. Whether the poll is sent to a service provider of the application directly by the proxy server, or by the proxy server through the operator proxy is configurable or reconfigurable.

Claims

1. A method of integration of content caching with a network operator for traffic alleviation a wireless network, the method, comprising:

detecting, by an operator proxy of the network operator, a poll from an application on a mobile device which would have been served using a cache element from a local cache on the mobile device, after the cache element stored in the local cache has been invalidated;

wherein, the cache element in the local cache is invalidated when a proxy server remote from the mobile device detects new or changed data from a content provider;

forwarding the poll from the application on the mobile device to another proxy remote from the mobile device which is different from the proxy server.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising, receiving a response to the poll from the content provider and providing the response to the application on the mobile device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein, the response is received by the other proxy.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein, the other proxy sends the response to the application on the mobile device through the operator proxy.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein, the poll can instead be forwarded to the proxy server rather than the other proxy based on configuration or reconfiguration.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein, whether the poll is forwarded to the proxy server or to the other proxy is determined by the network operator.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein, the response is provided to the application by a local proxy on the mobile device.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein, the local proxy is native to an operating system of the mobile device.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising, storing the response as cache elements in the local cache on the mobile device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein, the other proxy sends the response to the proxy server such that the proxy server determines whether the response is still valid for the poll.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the proxy server monitors validity of the cache element through the other proxy.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein, the proxy server forwards the poll to the other proxy to send to the service provider.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein, the proxy server utilizes the response received by the other proxy from the service provider to determine the validity of the cache element on the local cache of the mobile device.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein, the cache element is invalided or removed on the mobile device when notified by the proxy server.

15. The method of claim 7, wherein, the local proxy and the proxy server comprise a distributed cache system;

wherein, the proxy server is remote from the mobile device.

16. The method of claim 7, wherein, the local proxy, the other proxy, and the proxy server comprise a distributed cache system;

wherein, the proxy server is remote from the other proxy.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein, the local proxy, the other proxy, and the proxy server comprise a distributed cache system;

wherein, the proxy server is integrated with the other proxy.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein, the other proxy includes a proxy cache storage and is able to store responses at the proxy cache storage to service the polls forwarded from the operator proxy which are repeated.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein, the other proxy is able to store DNS cache entries in the proxy cache storage.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein, the other proxy is able to store responses or DNS cache entries in a proxy cache storage for multiple mobile devices on the wireless network.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein, the other proxy is able to provide a response from the proxy cache storage to the application through the operator proxy such that the service provider need not be polled to speed up response time to the application.

30. The system of claim 21, wherein, the cache element in the local cache is invalidated when a proxy server remote from the mobile device detects new or changed data from the content provider for the application;

wherein, the proxy server is a server-side component of the distributed traffic optimizer that is integrated;

wherein, the cache element is invalided or removed on the mobile device when notified by the proxy server;

wherein, the distributed traffic optimizer that is integrated comprises a distributed caching or proxy system comprising a client-side component residing on a mobile device in the wireless network and a server-side component remote from the mobile device.

22. A system which integrates a distributed traffic optimizer for traffic alleviation in a wireless network, the system, comprising:

a server which, detects, a poll from an application on a mobile device which would have been served using a cache element from a local cache on the mobile device, wherein, the poll is received if the cache element stored in the local cache has been invalidated;

the server forwards the poll from the application on the mobile device to service the poll via a content provider for the application.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein, the server includes an operator proxy operated by a network operator of the wireless network.

24. The system of claim 22, wherein, the server includes another proxy which is not operated by a network operator of the wireless network to service the poll from the application on the mobile device.

25. The system of claim 22, wherein, the server sends the poll to a proxy server which is a server-side component of the distributed traffic optimizer that is integrated;

wherein, the poll is sent to a service provider of the application by the proxy server.

26. The system of claim 22, wherein, the proxy server sends the poll to the service provider through the server operated by a network operator of the wireless network.

27. The system of claim 22, wherein, the server receives a response to the poll from the service provider and provides the response to the application on the mobile device.

28. The system of claim 26, wherein, the response is provided to the application by a local proxy on the mobile device;

wherein, the local proxy is a client-side component of the distributed traffic optimizer.

29. The system of claim 27, wherein, the local proxy is native to an operating system of the mobile device.
